Carrollton Newman Smith football player dies after drowning in Lewisville Lake

Update, 2:43 p.m.: Jones had just finished his junior year at Carrollton's Newman Smith High School, where he excelled on as a defensive tackle on the football team. Recruiting websites listed him as a Division 1 college prospect with a scholarship offer from the New Mexico State University.

A memorial service for Jones has been scheduled at the high school’s football field at 8 p.m.

Update, 12:37 p.m.: Game Warden Daron Blackerby confirmed this afternoon that the death was a drowning. Blackerby said that Jones was at a party on the dock celebrating the end of the school year.

“[He] swam a little ways away from the boat slip and was unable to get back,” Blackerby said. “Several of the people there tried to jump in and looked for him. They were unable to find him.”

Divers from the Lewisville Fire Department were called to the scene and found Jones’ body within about 30 minutes. They performed CPR and transferred him to the hospital, but were unable to resuscitate him.

Original: A 17-year-old Dallas resident died early Saturday morning at Lewisville Lake, according to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office.

Details of the death are limited and the medical examiner has not declared an official cause, but media reports indicate that it was drowning. The victim has been identified as Jaquis Jones, a resident of Far North Dallas. A medical examiner’s report indicates that he was rushed to the Medical Center of Lewisville, where he was pronounced dead at 2:21 a.m.

The incident occurred at the Pier 121 Marina, a facility at the southeast corner of the lake that offers boat storage, rentals and dining.
