Melissa gets pitching gem from Landon Wilson, forces Game 3
MOUNT PLEASANT — Landon Wilson pitched a complete game three-hitter and struck out 11 as Melissa defeated defending state champion Texarkana Pleasant Grove, 1-0, in Game 2 of the Class 3A Region II final at Northeast Texas Community College.
The series is now tied, and the decisive Game 3 will be played Saturday. Pleasant Grove defeated Melissa, 4-2, in Game 1.
Wilson retired the final eight Pleasant Grove batters, five by strikeout.
The game’s lone run came on a sacrifice fly by senior third baseman Chris Smith in the top of the fourth inning to score Grant Hawn. Smith lifted the ball to shallow left center field. Center fielder Dylan Silvey made the catch and an excellent throw home, but catcher Cason Cordray was unable to make a clean catch to tag out Hawn.
Zach Torres was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Hawn entered to pinch-run for Torres and advanced to second on a balk. CJ Tyler’s ground-out to second advanced Hawn to third.
The game featured a combined 19 strikeouts and no extra-base hits.
Melissa (30-9-1) left the bases loaded in the top of the fifth inning and stranded runners at second and third in the sixth. Melissa stranded eight runners for the game; Pleasant Grove stranded two.
Pleasant Grove’s best chance came in the fourth inning, when it had runners at first and third with one out. Silvey stole second, but Ty Harp was thrown out at home on a double-steal attempt. Wilson then struck out junior pitcher Trey Jeans to end the inning.
Jeans struck out four in 41/3 innings and took the loss. Silvey replaced Jeans and struck out four. At the plate, Silvey went 2-for-3 to lead Pleasant Grove (26-13).
Wilson walked Pleasant Grove leadoff hitter Alex Alsup to start the game, but settled down and walked only one more batter the rest of the way. Melissa’s senior shortstop Camden Duzenack finished 2-for-4.
