Baseball player of the week (5/13): Waxahachie’s David Martinelli
What he did: In Waxahachie’s one-game playoff against McKinney North — the top 4A team in the SportsDayHS area rankings — Martinelli pitched a no-hitter and hit a third-inning home run in the 1-0 victory.
Who is he? A 6-2 senior pitcher and shortstop.
The stats: Martinelli is hitting .409 with three doubles, three triples, five home runs and 25 RBIs. He is also 4-1 with a 2.23 ERA, 50 strikeouts and five saves in 401/3 innings.
He said it: “I wasn’t thinking about [the no-hitter] too much before, and then the sixth came around. The top of the order came up; they didn’t have any hits. They’re a good-hitting team, so I just tried to keep the ball low and let my defense make plays for me.”
Coach said it: “He’s a five-tool kid, there’s no doubt about that. He hasn’t had a fantastic year average- wise. I think he pressed a little bit, put too much pressure on himself. There’s no doubt he’s got that kind of power. … He’s just going to get better, too, as he goes to the next level.” — Tracy Wood
