Baseball roundup: Allen wins takes series lead with walk-off win

ALLEN — Allen sophomore Kyler Murray lined a sacrifice fly to center to drive in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh for a 7-6 victory over Rockwall-Heath in Game 1 of a best-of-3 Class 5A area-round playoff series Friday.

Heath rallied for one run in the sixth and two in the seventh, with a two-run single by Logan Kinney making it 6-6 heading into the bottom of seventh. Allen’s Matt Hicks singled to start the seventh and advanced to third on a bunt single by Phillip Ingram and an intentional walk.

Allen took a 6-2 lead with a four-run third inning.

Class 5A

Southlake Carroll 6, San Angelo Central 4: Chris Altimont hit a three-run homer with two outs in the top of the seventh to give the state’s fourth-ranked 5A team the win in Game 1 of a best-of-3 series. TCU signee Tyler Alexander struck out 14 for Carroll (29-4-1).

Plano West 7, Sachse 4: Plano West scored four runs in the fifth inning to complete a rally from 4-0 down in Game 1 of a best-of-3 series.

Sachse scored four runs in the first, but a three-run home run by Plano West’s Connor Smith in the third made it 4-3. Blake Bruce and Mason Gentry hit back-to-back RBI doubles in the fifth to give Plano West (20-11-1) the lead.

Plano 6, Longview 0: Ryan Thomas pitched a three-hit shutout as Plano (22-14) won the opener of a best-of-3 series.

Mitchell Hansen was 2-for-4 with two RBIs for Plano, and Kenneth Tabor was 2-for-3 and scored two runs. Ryan Robertson also had two hits.

Arlington Martin 5, Lubbock Coronado 1: Daniel Lingua pitched a complete game as Martin (29-6-1), the state’s 10th-ranked 5A team, won its series opener.

Landon Sackett drove in two runs for Martin (29-6-1), and Josh Watson was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.

Flower Mound Marcus 3, South Grand Prairie 2: Trey Mound drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the seventh, driving in Nick Lewis with the winning run for Marcus (29-6) in Game 1. Lewis opened the seventh with a single and finished 3-for-4. Jack Cushing and Austin Ozee combined on a four-hitter.

Grapevine 5, Mansfield 3: Connor McGuire scored two runs, and David Fry drove in two as Grapevine won Game 1.

Hurst L.D. Bell 10, Waco Midway 9: John Mark Garner hit a walk-off, bases-loaded RBI single in the bottom of the 10th to give L.D. Bell the Game 1 win. L.D. Bell led, 7-2, before Midway scored four in the sixth and one in the seventh to tie it. Both teams scored twice in the eighth.

Rockwall 1, McKinney 0: Alec Vice got the victory as Rockwall won Game 1 with a one-hit shutout.


Class 4A

Frisco Wakeland 7, Hillcrest 2: Wakeland scored five runs in the first two innings on only two hits in a one-game playoff. Wakeland (21-12-1) advanced to play Prosper in the 4A Region II quarterfinals. Austin Gehle pitched a complete game, giving up four hits. He retired the last 11 batters he faced.

Prosper 15, Bryan Adams 0: TCU signee Brandon Gilson pitched a one-hit shutout and struck out 11 in five innings as Prosper won a one-game playoff. Lance Brooks hit a first-inning grand slam for Prosper (17-15), and Aaron Maxey was 3-for-3 with two RBIs.

Frisco Liberty 11-19, Thomas Jefferson 0-1: Liberty swept the series after learning Friday that it would play Thomas Jefferson instead of North Dallas. North Dallas self-reported that it used an ineligible player in its first-round playoff sweep of Thomas Jefferson.
