Plano softball routs Lake Highlands; Lewisville, Frisco Centennial advance
PLANO — Pouncing on every opportunity on the base paths helped Plano run-rule Lake Highlands, 11-0, in Monday’s bi-district playoff.
Plano (16-14) had just one extra-base hit, a fourth-inning triple by Nicole Lange, but took every extra base available in the Class 5A one-game playoff.
Plano also took advantage of three errors by Lake Highlands (19-4). Two errors came in a six-run third inning that saw Plano send 11 batters to the plate. Back-to-back RBI singles by Brianna Boulanger and Calli Irvin sparked the rally.
“We focused a lot on popping up as soon as you got to the base, pop it up and find the ball in case they made a miscue and you can take an extra base,” Plano coach Cynthia Zea said. “We did a lot of extra base-running this week to prepare for that, and they did a great job executing.”
Plano, which will meet Rockwall-Heath in the area round, dominated despite having finished fourth in District 10-5A. Lake Highlands, with four sophomores and freshman pitcher Mary Kate Brennan in the starting lineup, was the 9-5A champion.
“Our district was so hard, every game we had to play as hard as we can,” said Irvin, who was also the winning pitcher. “Our district definitely helped us out.”
Lake Highlands failed to score despite getting three of its four hits in the fourth inning. A fielder’s choice eliminated one base runner, and another was tagged at home trying to score from second on a single.
Zea said that after scouting Lake Highlands last week, she knew the ball would be put in play. Lake Highlands struck out just three times Monday.
“We knew, though, that if we played our game that it really didn’t matter who was in the other dugout,” Zea said. “As long as we played our game … we would win the game.”
Lewisville 14, Hurst L.D. Bell 0: Emily Lasky hit a grand slam and Miranda Worthington also homered as District 5-5A No. 4 seed Lewisville beat 6-5A champion L.D. Bell in Game 3 of a best-of-3 5A bi-district series.
After being shut out in the series opener, Lewisville outscored L.D. Bell 23-3 in the final two games. Lewisville (21-12) advanced to play Mansfield in the second round.
Lasky was 2-for-3 with five RBIs, and Worthington had three RBIs and scored three runs. Chloe Campise and Maribeth Gorsuch combined on a two-hit shutout.
Frisco Centennial 8, North Forney 5: Centennial won Game 3 of its 4A first-round series and advanced to play Molina.
