Softball player of the week (4/22): Plano West's Holly Neese

What she did: Neese hit for the cycle Friday, going 4-for-4 with five RBIs in a 10-5 win over Plano East that gave Plano West a share of the District 10-5A title. Plano West (15-13, 7-3) tied McKinney Boyd for first and will be the district’s No. 2 playoff seed. Plano West will host Richardson Berkner in a one-game, first-round playoff at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

Who is she? A junior shortstop who has orally committed to Abilene Christian.

The stats: Neese is hitting .420 with three home runs and 27 RBIs.

She said it: “We were confident, hungry and ready to get that district title.” When asked if she knew that she needed a triple to hit for the cycle going into her last at-bat, she said, “My teammates told me about it, but I wasn’t really focused on it.”

Coach said it: “She’s a great hitter. She’s been a great hitter for me all year. The last game against Plano, she went 0-for-4. I think that fueled her fire. She was hitting all types of pitches [Friday]. She was definitely locked in.” — Mike Ledsome

Did you know? Neese is thinking about a career in education, probably as a math teacher. … Her favorite athlete is the Los Angeles Angels’ Albert Pujols.
