Plano West twins Brooke, Casie Ramsier propel team into 5A girls soccer state finals
GEORGETOWN – There’s an air of inevitability surrounding Plano West’s girls soccer team. If the goals haven’t come yet, they are on their way.
With a stiff wind at their backs, Plano West scored four second-half goals, cruising past Katy Taylor 4-0 in the 5A semifinal at Georgetown’s Birkelbach Field.
“We were getting so many great chances in the first half – battling the wind – I think with all those opportunities, we knew it just to come if we just kept pressing in the second half,” Plano West Carley Phillips.
The defending state champs, Plano West (27-0-2) will try to become the first 5A girls team to repeat since West won three straight titles from 2000 to 2002. Phillips, in her second final in her second season as head coach, was on the varsity roster as a freshman on the 2002 team.
Brooke Ramsier, last year’s tournament MVP, scored the game’s first goal, digging out the ball on a scramble and putting it past Taylor’s keeper Adriana Torres in the 46th minute. Ramsier assisted on a goal six minutes later; Nicole Smith pounced on a loose ball in the six-yard box after a great corner by Ramsier.
“I love it when we just keep on shooting, even if you aren’t scoring but you have fun and keep pounding the ball down their throats,” Ramsier said. “It’s good. It gives you energy and some momentum, too.”
Ramsier’s twin, Casie, and Gabby Hadly scored the final two goals for West, unbeaten in its last 37 games. West has outscored playoff opponents 24-1.
In the game’s opening minutes, Katy Taylor (23-4-2) threatened West’s defense, playing a few long passes that goalkeeper Claire Wheatley had to rush off her line to claim.
“They tried to send a lot of big balls through, and the wind definitely helped them a lot,” Wheatley said.
But Taylor didn’t have an answer going against the wind, with only one shot in the second half.
“It’s never boring to watch your team score,” Wheatley said. “Four goals, that’s amazing.”
