Softball player of the week (4/15): McKinney Boyd's Erin Riding

What she did: Riding pitched a four-hitter and struck out 12 in a 5-0 win over Allen, then threw a three-hit shutout and struck out 11 in a 10-0 victory against Plano East. The wins left McKinney Boyd (16-12-1, 6-3) tied with Plano East and Plano West for first place in District 10-5A with one district game left. Boyd finishes by hosting McKinney on Thursday, while Plano East plays at Plano West.

Who is she? A sophomore pitcher who has committed to Iowa.

The stats: Riding is 15-9 with a 1.35 ERA. She has 260 strikeouts in 144 innings.

She said it: “I just go out and play and have a lot of confidence. I have an amazing team behind me and a great coaching staff.”

Coach said it: “She’s so focused and driven. She gets in a zone and is pitching well. Every time she goes out there, she is more confident.” — Maureen Fritz

Did you know? Riding wants to become a physical therapist, and she has interned at the Peak Physical Therapy and Sports Medicine Center of McKinney. … Riding wore a mask for protection when pitching as a freshman. After going 20-6 and helping Boyd reach the regional quarterfinals last season, she stopped wearing the mask. … All-district catcher Maddy VonHagel missed six weeks with a broken thumb this season, but Cassandra Heller filled in until VonHagel returned and helped Riding not miss a beat.
