Six area soccer teams head to state tourney; Highland Park, Plano West girls seek to repeat as champions
Defending girls champions Highland Park (4A) and Plano West (5A) will be part of a six-team contingent from the Dallas-Fort Worth area in this week’s University Interscholastic League state soccer tournament, held Thursday to Saturday at Georgetown’s Birkelbach Field.
It’s the most area teams to advance to the state tournament since 2007, when six D-FW area schools combined for three of four titles.
Highland Park (24-0-5) — unbeaten in 47 games — and Plano West (26-0-2) — unbeaten in its last 36 games — are trying to become the first teams to repeat as champions since the Richardson Pearce girls won 4A championships in 2009 and 2010.
Highland Park will face 2012 state qualifier Cedar Park (22-3-2) in one 4A semifinal Thursday. Denton Guyer (26-1-0) will open the tournament against Magnolia (19-5-2) in the other 4A semifinal Thursday morning.
Five-time champion Plano West will play Katy Taylor (23-3-2) in a Friday 5A semifinal and could meet Southlake Carroll in the final. Carroll (29-2-0) will play San Antonio Johnson (21-4-3).
Coppell and Mesquite Poteet will compete for boys titles in 5A and 4A. Last year was the first season since 2006 in which neither boys champion was from North Texas.
Coppell (21-2-0) will face Kingwood (23-1-4) in Friday’s 5A semifinal, while Mesquite Poteet (23-1-3) will play 4A top seed Waco University (31-0-0) in Thursday’s nightcap.
