4A Region I soccer tournament: Guyer girls prevail; Birdville boys fall
WICHITA FALLS — Denton Guyer held Canyon Randall without a shot on goal and rolled to a 3-0 win in the Class 4A Region I semifinals Friday at Memorial Stadium.
Guyer (25-1) will face Trophy Club Byron Nelson (27-2-1) at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the regional final. Guyer is the only team to have beaten Byron Nelson this season.
Guyer outshot Randall, the team that ended Guyer’s season in the 2010 regional final, 11-0, and got two goals from Hannah Alspach and another from Brittany Crabtree.
Nelson will probably be without senior forward Lynnsey Brim, who scored one of her team’s goals in Friday’s 2-1 semifinal win over Amarillo, before leaving the game with a right ankle injury.
In the 17th minute, Guyer’s Peyton Bucklew sent a long centering pass almost 40 yards as Crabtree was backing up toward the goal and approaching Randall keeper Alyssa Salvato. The lengthy Crabtree out-jumped Salvato and headed the ball backward into the empty net to give Guyer an early lead on her 35th goal of the season.Trophy Club Byron Nelson 2, Amarillo 1:
Bonnie Ruten allowed one goal and made a key save for Trophy Club Byron Nelson during its Class 4A Region I semifinal win.
Ruten went into the second half with a 2-0 cushion but yielded a goal by Amarillo’s Jordan Duke in the 56th minute to cut the Byron Nelson lead in half.
Amarillo (14-9-2) had a golden opportunity to tie the match with seven minutes remaining after Byron Nelson was whistled for a handball in the box. That led to a penalty kick from Amarillo’s Riley McGill, who hesitated on her run up to the ball and hit a shot that Ruten dove to her right to stop on what was just Amarillo’s second shot on goal.
Byron Nelson peppered Amarillo with 11 shots on goal in the first half and made two of them count as Madison Hall scored in the 30th minute off an assist from Alexa Bain. Less than five minutes later, Byron Nelson got another goal from Lynnsey Brim, who fired a shot from 19 yards out to send her team to the half with a 2-0 lead. Brim later was helped off the field with an apparent right leg injury and didn’t return.
El Paso Del Valle 2, Birdville 0: Birdville’s best playoff run in program history ended with a loss in a 4A Region I semifinal.
Del Valle scored in the sixth minute as Roberto Reyes took a through ball from Gerardo Perez and beat Birdville’s keeper to the far post. Del Valle (22-6) tacked on an insurance goal by Arturo Pinon.
