Plano West girls shut out Allen, 2-0, to advance to regional tournament
PLANO — Plano West missed a little to the right and left, hit an upright and sent a few shots sailing a foot or two over the crossbar. But with its defense stingy once again Tuesday night, the Lady Wolves only needed one goal to keep chasing their ultimate goal: a second straight state title.
Plano West got that goal in the first half at John Clark Stadium and then added one in the second half to beat Allen, 2-0, in a Class 5A Region II quarterfinal.
Plano West (23-0-2) will open play in the regional tournament on Friday at 11 a.m. against either Round Rock Cedar Ridge or Pflugerville Hendrickson.
“We have a target on our backs,” said Casie Ramsier, who scored one goal and assisted on the other. “But like our motto says, we refuse to lose, so we just keep going.”
Plano West got its first goal in the 20th minute when Tori Gates sent a through ball to Ramsier, the team’s leading scorer. The senior, slightly right of the goal and about 20 yards away, drilled a shot into the upper left of the goal. Plano West scored again in the 65th minute when Gates scored on an assist from Ramsier.
The best scoring opportunity for Allen (13-8-2) came in the 10th minute, when Morgan Cherry sent a crossing pass that Hailey Jensen headed toward the net. But the shot sailed well above the crossbar.
Allen was unable to score a goal in all three of its losses to Plano West this season, but that’s not unusual for the Lady Wolves’ opponents. Plano West has 12 shutouts in its last 14 matches and has outscored opponents 43-2 during that stretch.
