Soccer playoff roundup: Jesuit boys give up late goal, win shootout; Allen, Arlington Martin girls move on
Jesuit claimed a 4-3 edge in penalty kicks and escaped Allen with 2-1 shootout victory in a Class 5A Region II bi-district playoff match Thursday night.
Allen’s Andrew Greenleaf scored with 40 seconds left to play to force overtime after Allen had trailed 1-0 for most of the game.
The game moved to penalty kicks after two scoreless overtimes, with Jesuit’s Brendon Chavez putting away the game-winning try to go with two penalty kick saves by goalkeeper Matt Tulli.
“It was a pretty even match. Both teams had their moments in each half,” said Jesuit coach Charles DeLong, whose team improved to 15-4-2.Mesquite Poteet 2, Hillcrest 1:
Poteet secured an early lead and held on late to secure a 2-1 win over Hillcrest in a 4A Region II boys soccer area playoff match at Franklin Stadium. The 5A bi-district playoff game was postponed after a delay of 1 hour, 45 minutes while waiting for the referees to arrive. Flower Mound coach David Doyle said the miscommunication occurred when an assigner from the Tarrant County officials chapter thought the game was scheduled for Friday. The game is rescheduled for noon Friday at Carrollton’s Standridge Stadium.
Arlington Martin 1, Keller Central 0: An unassisted goal by Lauren Prater with about seven minutes left lifted Martin (17-8-1) to a 5A Region I bi-district playoff win. Two headers by Keller Central bounced off the crossbar.
Allen 5, Skyline 0: Allen scored four second-half goals — two by Allie Johnson — en route to a win in a 5A Region II bi-district playoff game at Allen. Already leading 1-0 at halftime, Allen (13-7-3) scored one minute into the second half on a header by Madison Ledet and never looked back.
Plano West 6, Richardson Berkner 0: Five Plano West players scored in the 5A Region II bi-district playoff win at Berkner. Ashley Smith led Plano West (23-0-2) with two goals. Plano West didn’t allow Berkner a shot on goal.
Mesquite Poteet 3, Molina 0: Kaylah Hunter netted two goals in the first half to help Poteet to a 4A Region II area playoff win at Forester Stadium. Poteet (18-5-1) held strong on defense, allowing just four shots on goal.
McKinney North 4, Carrollton Creekview 0: McKinney North scored twice in each half in a shutout win in a 4A Region II area playoff match. North (18-1-3) got goals from Alon Encalade and Belicia Mendiola in the first half and Hadlie Tucker and Sadie Decker in the second half.
