Replay: Flower Mound softball hands top-ranked Marcus its 1st loss

Kelly Powell’s two-out double in the top of the seventh drove in the winning run Thursday and gave the Flower Mound softball team a 2-1 win over Flower Mound Marcus, the state’s No. 1-ranked Class 5A team.
It was the first loss for Marcus (20-1-1, 3-1), which is ranked No. 5 in the nation by MaxPreps.com. It put Flower Mound (15-8-1, 3-1) in a tie with Marcus and Lewisville for first place in District 5-5A. Lewisville beat Hebron, 10-1.
Entering the game, Marcus senior pitcher Hannah Null hadn’t allowed an earned run this season, and she had pitched 35 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings since last allowing a run on March 8. Her scoreless streak reached 39 2/3 innings before Flower Mound scored a run with one out in the fifth to tie the score, 1-1. In the seventh, Taylor Nabors doubled with one out to set up Powell’s winning hit.
Flower Mound pitcher Annelise Oswalt held Marcus to three hits and struck out eight. Null (13-1) struck out 15 for Marcus.
Lovejoy beats No. 1 Wylie East in 9-inning thriller
Chase Tucker's RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth gave the Lovejoy baseball team a 1-0 win over Wylie East, the No. 1 team in SportsDay's 4A area rankings. Tucker's hit came after Logan Michaels singled Mason Chase to third.
Lovejoy (16-6), Wylie East (15-3-1) and McKinney North (16-1) are tied for first in District 13-4A, with all sitting at 6-1 in district play.
Michaels pitched a two-hit shutout and struck out 11 for Lovejoy, the area's fifth-ranked team. Bryar Barnes threw a complete game for Wylie East.
Big win for Naaman
Jacob Anderson had three RBIs to lead the Garland Naaman Forest baseball team to a 5-1 win over Sachse, the No. 8 team in SportsDay’s 5A area rankings. The win left Naaman Forest (13-10-1, 5-1) tied with Sachse for first place in District 11-5A.
Matt Herrick got the win, allowing one run and three hits in five innings, and Branden Jarka got the save.
UT-Arlington signee Riley Fira homered, and Ennis pounded out 10 hits and beat Waxahachie, 9-4, in a matchup of area-ranked 4A softball teams. Ennis is ranked third in the state and No. 1 in the area. Waxahachie is No. 5 in the area rankings.
District 15-4A leader Ennis (22-2, 9-0) remained one game ahead of Mansfield Legacy, which beat Mansfield Lake Ridge. Ryan Wright was 2-for-4 with five RBIs for Legacy (20-5-1, 8-1), the state's 10th-ranked team.
The Keller Central softball team posted a 10-3 win over Southlake Carroll, the area’s fifth-ranked 5A team. ... Preston Palmeiro and Oklahoma football signee Cody Thomas both homered for the second straight game to help Colleyville Heritage (12-8, 5-1 District 6-5A) beat Carrollton R.L. Turner, 11-1, in baseball.
Frisco Liberty: Was 2-for-3 with two RBIs as Liberty, the No. 4 team in SportsDay’s 4A area rankings, beat No. 7 Frisco Wakeland, 5-0. JT Vangelder was 2-for-3 and scored two runs for Liberty.
McKinney North: Hit a game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the eighth to give McKinney North (16-1, 6-1 District 13-4A), the area’s second-ranked 4A team, a 2-1 win over Denison.
Forney: Homered, doubled and had five RBIs as Forney (14-6, 6-1) gained sole possession of first place in District 10-4A with a 12-4 win over Carrollton Newman Smith. Trey Bedrick homered, doubled and drove in three for the area’s eighth-ranked 4A team.
Lake Highlands: Pitched a three-hit shutout in a 2-0 win over Richardson Pearce that dropped Pearce into a tie with Jesuit for first place in 9-5A. Alex Irion homered for Lake Highlands.
Midlothian: Was 4-for-5 with three doubles and three RBIs to lead Midlothian to an 11-8 win over Cedar Hill. The win kept Midlothian (16-4-1, 7-0) unbeaten in District 7-5A.
Keller: The Texas Tech signee hit a game-winning grand slam in the bottom of the eighth to give Keller (17-4-1, 6-2 District 4-5A), the state’s 16th-ranked 5A team, a 9-5 win over Justin Northwest. That came after Northwest’s Sydnee Hinkle hit a grand slam in the top of the seventh to tie the score, 5-5, and force extra innings.
Mansfield Timberview: The freshman, who has committed to Oklahoma State, pitched a one-hit shutout and struck out 11 as District 7-5A leader Timberview (16-4-1, 9-0) beat Duncanville, 13-0. Timberview remained one game ahead of Mansfield in 7-5A.
Forney: Was 3-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs as the state’s 18th-ranked 4A team beat Carrollton Newman Smith, 18-3. Forney (16-6, 8-0 District 10-4A) leads District 10-4A by one game over Mesquite Poteet.
Mesquite Poteet: Was 4-for-4 with two doubles, a triple, three runs and two RBIs as Poteet (17-8, 7-1 District 10-4A) beat West Mesquite, 15-3.
Lewisville: Was 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI in a 10-1 win over Hebron that put Lewisville (18-6, 3-1) in a three-way tie for first in District 5-5A. Emily Lasky had three RBIs.
Samuell: Pitched a one-hit shutout and struck out 10 in a 21-0 win over Spruce.
Home runs hit by Woodrow Wilson softball player Baylee Willingham in a 26-2 win over Lincoln. She had five RBIs.
Combined hits in nine at-bats for David Fry, Will Jenkins and Antonio Lima, the last three hitters in the Grapevine baseball team’s lineup, in a 12-1 win over Irving MacArthur.
Strikeouts for Forney baseball pitcher Cody Tyler, a Wichita State signee, in a 12-4 win over Carrollton Newman Smith.
