Flower Mound wins battle of area baseball powers with 8-2 victory over Coppell

COPPELL — In a showdown between SportsDay’s top-ranked Class 5A baseball teams, Flower Mound’s ability to capitalize on two miscues proved to be the difference.

The Jaguars turned two botched grounders by Coppell into seven unearned runs and cruised behind left-hander Seth Jordan to an 8-2 District 5-5A victory Thursday night at Cowboy Field.

Mackay Jacobsen drove in four runs for Flower Mound (21-3, 7-0), No. 1 in SportsDay’s rankings, with a bases-loaded single in a four-run first and a two-run homer to cap a four-run fourth.

Flower Mound’s Mitch Andrews chipped in with a two-run triple in the first, and Jeff Meenach contributed a rally-sustaining RBI-single in the fourth.

“The difference this year is we don’t give up after two outs,” said Jacobsen.

“Everything that came after the errors came by way of hits,” said Flower Mound coach Danny Wallace after his team‘s 11th straight win. “It wasn’t like Coppell was throwing the ball all over the lot. We seized the opportunity.”

With the victory, Jordan improved to 5-0.

“Getting those early runs is what you dream about,” the 6-2 junior said. “I was not afraid of making a mistake.”

Both runs for Coppell (15-4-2, 5-2) came on solo homers over the left field wall, by Matt Delaney in the second inning and by Cal Hernandez in the third that made it 4-2.

The extra outs took a toll on the Coppell pitching staff. Three pitchers were needed.

Starter Austin Gardner was removed after throwing 32 pitches in the first inning.

Coppell committed four errors in a 4-2 loss to Flower Mound on March 15.

Because the six-team 5-5A plays three rounds of district games, the teams will meet once more, at Flower Mound on April 16.
