McKinney North girls soccer ousts Frisco Centennial, 2-1, in OT
MCKINNEY — Belicia Mendiola rescued the McKinney North girls from the uncertainty of a shootout with her 30th goal of the season.
The junior forward’s right-footed shot from 17 yards with 2:24 remaining in overtime carried McKinney North to a 2-1 Class 4A bi-district playoff victory over Frisco Centennial on Tuesday night at McKinney Boyd.
“I faked left, put the ball on my right foot and saw an opening to the far post,” Mendiola said. “I didn’t want it to go to penalty kicks.”
Mendiola, who has orally committed to Belmont, gave McKinney North a 1-0 lead with a goal in the final minutes of the first half.
Hadlie Tucker assisted on both goals, giving her 15 for the season.
McKinney North (17-1-3), champion of District 17-4A and No. 5 in SportsDay’s ranking, will take an 11-game winning streak into the area playoff round.
It took a key save by junior keeper Clarissa Ledesma to keep upset-minded Centennial (14-10), the fourth seed from District 18-4A, from winning in regulation.
“I jumped and blocked the shot with my hand, then I had to scramble to get the ball,” Ledesma said. “Centennial surprised us with their speed of play.”
Centennial’s Charme’ Morgan leveled the match in the 14th minute of the second half when she headed a high bouncing ball past Ledesma. Michelle Preston helped Centennial generate the majority of the scoring chances in the final 60 minutes.
“They gave us everything we wanted and then some,” McKinney North coach Lance Lovell said.
