Baseball/softball replay (3/22): Flower Mound Marcus shuts out Lewisville

FM Marcus wins battle of softball powers
In a matchup of two of the top four teams in SportsDay’s 5A area softball rankings, No. 1 Flower Mound Marcus beat No. 4 Lewisville, 2-0.
Hannah Null, an Abilene Christian signee, pitched a one-hit shutout and struck out 16 for Marcus (19-0-1, 2-0 District 5-5A), the No. 5 team in the MaxPreps.com national rankings. Null is 12-0 and hasn’t allowed an earned run this season. Angelo State signee Kelly Johnson was 2-for-3 with an RBI for Marcus.
Win No. 300
Denton Guyer softball coach Keith Medford earned his 300th career win as Guyer beat Wichita Falls, 15-0. Medford went 130-65-1 in seven years at Irving and is now 170-78-5 in eight years at Guyer.
Guyer’s Megan Washam hit her fifth home run, two short of the school season record.
The Southlake Carroll baseball team, ranked third in the state in 5A, had to go 12 innings to beat Keller, 5-4.
Carroll (17-2-1, 5-0 District 4-5A) scored twice in the seventh, as did Keller (13-7, 2-3), to force extra innings. It came three days after Carroll coach Larry Hughes earned his 500th career victory.
Nic Ready’s two-out hit in the bottom of the seventh drove in Darius Hill with the winning run as the Jesuit baseball team beat Lake Highlands, 5-4. Jesuit is No. 7 in SportsDay’s 5A area rankings.
Big win for Plano East
The Plano East softball team gained sole possession of first place in District 10-5A with a 9-3 win over McKinney Boyd, the No. 10 team in SportsDay's 5A area rankings. Plano East, a state semifinalist last season, is now 4-0 in district play.
Birdville at Trophy Club Byron Nelson softball game, 1 p.m. Saturday: This nondistrict game will feature two of the elite 4A teams in the state in 11th-ranked Byron Nelson and 18th-ranked Birdville. Byron Nelson pitcher Ashley Dumoulin has signed with Rhode Island, and Birdville pitcher Susan Welborn has signed with Texas Tech.
Ryan Kinney, Rockwall-Heath: Threw a five-inning no-hitter and struck out seven to lead District 12-5A leader Rockwall-Heath (14-7, 4-0) to an 11-0 win over Mesquite Horn. Russell Hughes hit a grand slam for Rockwall-Heath, the No. 9 team in SportsDay’s 5A area rankings.
Grant Devore, Frisco Wakeland: Was 4-for-4 with a double, triple, five RBIs and two runs as Wakeland, the No. 9 team in the 4A area rankings, beat No. 8 The Colony, 14-4. Wakeland scored 10 runs in the bottom of the fifth to break a 4-4 tie.
Tanner Dickerson, Midlothian: Doubled twice and homered as Midlothian (14-4-1, 5-0) beat South Grand Prairie, 6-0, to gain sole possession of first place in 7-5A.
Andrew Morales, Cedar Hill: The sophomore threw a no-hitter in an 11-0 win over Mansfield Timberview. Cedar Hill (15-2-1, 4-1) is tied with South Grand Prairie for second place in District 7-5A, one game behind Midlothian.
Julian Pope, McKinney North: Pope combined with reliever Anthony Herrera on a three-hitter as McKinney North (15-0, 5-0 District 13-4A) beat Greenville, 7-2. Pope is 5-0 for the state’s seventh-ranked 4A team; Herrera has six saves.
Niko Buentello, Lewisville: Hit a game-winning home run in the 10th inning to beat Hebron, 5-3.
Jake McKenzie, W.T. White: Threw a one-hit shutout and struck out nine in a 9-0 win over Richardson.
Mariah Denson, Mansfield Timberview: The freshman, who has committed to Oklahoma State, pitched a perfect game and struck out 10 to lead District 7-5A leader Mansfield Timberview (14-4-1, 7-0) to an 11-0 win against Cedar Hill.
Chelsea Herndon, Hebron: The Florida signee was 3-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs and also pitched a two-hit shutout to lead Hebron to an 11-0 win over Denton Ryan, the No. 9 team in the 5A area rankings.
Nyka Wood, Richland: Hit two home runs, doubled and had four RBIs in a 10-0 win over Justin Northwest. Haley Freyman pitched a three-hit shutout for District 4-5A leader Richland (20-4, 6-0), the No. 3 team in SportsDay’s 5A area rankings.
Reagan Wright, Mansfield Legacy: Went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a home run, four RBIs and three runs as Legacy (18-5-1, 6-1 District 15-4A), the No. 2 team in the 4A area rankings, beat Arlington Seguin, 17-1.
Brooke Goad, Waxahachie: Hit her area-leading 12th home run of the season as the area’s seventh-ranked 4A team beat Mansfield Lake Ridge, 21-4.
40: Runs scored in the Garland Naaman Forest vs. North Garland softball game, a 25-15 Naaman Forest win. There were 12 extra-base hits in the game.
3: Home runs hit by the Flower Mound softball team in a 7-4 win vs. Coppell. Christy Lisenby, Kelly Powell and Annelise Oswalt hit the homers.
95: Career RBIs — a school record — for Mesquite Poteet’s Madison Yannetti. The Arkansas softball pledge had four RBIs in an 18-1 win vs. Terrell.
Jackson Cramer, Coppell: The West Virginia signee doubled twice to help Coppell, ranked fourth in the area in 5A, to an 11-4 victory against Denton Ryan.
Taylor Penn, Forney: The Louisiana Tech signee was 2-for-3 with three RBIs as Forney, the state’s 20th-ranked 4A team, beat No. 25 North Forney, 7-6. Forney trailed 4-0 after a half-inning, then won the game with a run in the bottom of the sixth after North Forney tied it 6-6 with two runs in the top of the sixth.
