Mesquite Poteet's 3-1 win over rival West Mesquite will likely result in top seed for boys soccer playoffs

MESQUITE — Mesquite Poteet took the latest match in its rivalry with West Mesquite with a 3-1 victory at Mesquite Memorial Stadium on Tuesday in a battle of two teams vying for the No. 1 seed in the upcoming playoffs.

Poteet (17-1-3, 10-1) and West Mesquite (18-5, 10-1) will be co-champions if both finish the regular season with wins.

“We won the district championship two years ago, and West won it last year,” Poteet coach Colby Peet said. “It seems like it comes to this every year. And this time, we’re co-champs needing a win to tie and a goal differential to get the top seed. That pretty much sums it up between us.”

Poteet’s two-goal differential would be the difference in the tiebreaker for the top seed. West Mesquite topped Poteet 1-0 in the district opener.

“We have a saying, ‘the first 10 and the last 10,’” said Ojeda, who leads Poteet with 29 goals this season. “We want to set the tone in the first 10 minutes and the last 10 minutes. We pushed hard and got the first goal early. And then the last goal was in the last 10.”

Trying to rally in the second half while going against a stiff wind, West Mesquite made it 2-1 as senior Isai Velasquez scored on set play with 12:14 remaining.

Poteet senior goalie Trevor Gilbert picked up his second career victory over West Mesquite with the help of a strong defensive back trio of Josh Sedeno, Hayden Long and Larry Carruso.
