Boys 5A Region II semifinals: Berkner wins in OT; Plano East ousted

Slam dunk caps off victory in the final minutes of OT shutout

WACO — Richardson Berkner put the stop on when it counted.

Tied 58-58 at the end of regulation, Berkner held Spring Westfield scoreless over the final four minutes en route to a 64-58 overtime win in a Class 5A Region II semifinal Friday.

Torey Everett started the 6-0 OT shutout with a pair of free throws, and Soma Edo, who led the team with 21 points, capped with it a slam dunk in the closing seconds. Keenan Evans added 14 points for Berkner.

Berkner (32-5) faces Austin Anderson (31-6) in Saturday’s championship game at 2 p.m. at Waco Midway.

Berkner appeared in command with a 37-25 lead early in the third quarter. But Westfield (31-7) erupted for a 19-1 run and went ahead 44-38 with two minutes left in the period.

After trailing 50-44 entering the fourth quarter, Berkner tied the score at 56-56 on Edo’s 3-point play with 49 seconds remaining. Everett’s pair of free throws at the 22-second mark retook the lead for Berkner at 58-56. But James Harrison, who paced all scorers with 25 points, tied the score for Westfield at the 3.8-second mark with two free throws.

Austin 52, Plano East 50: John Gramlich’s 3-pointers turned the tables. The senior guard nailed a pair in the fourth quarter to lead Austin Anderson past Plano East in a 5A Region II semifinal.

“We live and die by the three,” Gramlich said. “Tonight we lived.”

East took a 41-34 lead with 4:12 left. But Gramlich and Kevin Fisher hit back-to-back 3-pointers to cut East’s lead to one, and Gramlich’s 3-pointer put Anderson in front, 45-43.

Anderson led, 51-46, with 15 seconds left before Plano East rallied. Marcus Mathieu’s 3-pointer with four seconds left pulled East to within a point at 51-50. Gramlich was fouled with 0.7 seconds left and made his second free throw. Rasmus Bach then intercepted East’s desperation half-court pass.
