Cibolo Steele shocks previously unbeaten Pflugerville; undefeated Duncanville next

AUSTIN — A state championship game between No. 1 Duncanville and No. 2 Pflugerville seemed inevitable, but it wasn’t meant to be.

Previously unbeaten Pflugerville was knocked out by a hungrier Cibolo Steele team, 69-60, in a 5A state semifinal Friday night.

Pflugerville (38-1) suffered its second consecutive one-loss season without a state championship. Steele (33-5) will be playing for its first state title Saturday against top-ranked Duncanville.

McKenzie Calvert scored a team-high 17 points for Steele. She made a layup with 7:41 remaining in the fourth quarter that gave Steele its first lead of the game, and her team never looked back.

Steele outscored Pflugerville, 20-9, in the fourth quarter with a flurry of baskets by Erika Chapman and a 3-pointer from Sarai Rodriguez.

Steele had six players score seven points or more. It shot 45.1 percent from the floor and was 22-for-29 from the free throw line.

Pflugerville was 3-of-14 (21.4 percent) from the field in the fourth quarter as its game — and season — unraveled. Pflugerville led by as much as 10 in the first quarter.

Two of Pflugerville’s starters — Amy Staha and Brenisha Payne — were injured during the regional tournament last week. The pair didn’t enter Friday’s game until there were 16 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.
