Mesquite Horn's Rodney Webb expected to be approved as Rockwall's new football coach on Friday
The Rockwall ISD school board is expected to approve Mesquite Horn football coach Rodney Webb as Rockwall’s new football coach at a specially called meeting Friday morning.
It’ll be the third move the 45-year-old Webb has made in the last seven years, but he’s been able to do it all while living in Rockwall.
“My wife (Fran) is a teacher at Rockwall and my daughter is a freshman,” Webb said. “I’ve been blessed to be in some great situations and still have some stability for them. Not many coaches can say that.”
Webb has been at Mesquite Horn the last five seasons. Previously he was at nearby Royse City in Rockwall County. Webb told his Horn players Wednesday afternoon and is expected to meet with Rockwall players Friday afternoon and start at the program Monday.
“Bittersweet is a word I’ve used a lot over the last 24 hours,” Webb said. “There are not many jobs I would leave Horn for. It has been a 100 percent positive experience. The chance to be at the same school with my family and to be in a situation in Rockwall with students eager to win and the community hungry for success is a unique opportunity.”
Horn and Rockwall moved into District 12-5A together this past season with Horn taking a 45-21 victory. They’ll meet again in the upcoming 2013 season.
“It’s safe to say there will be a lot of emotions that night,” Webb said.
Horn reached the playoffs every year under Webb. Skyline defeated Horn in the second round last season. In 2010, Horn advanced to the Class 5A Division II state quarterfinals. In five seasons at Royse City, Webb had a 44-16 record with four playoff appearances including a run to the 3A state semifinals at Texas Stadium in 2004.
After moving to Class 5A from 4A, Rockwall went 2-8 last season. Former coach Scott Smith (now an assistant at Houston Baptist) had been at Rockwall since 2005 with three playoff qualifiers in seven seasons but without a playoff win. Rockwall returns sophomore standout running back Chris Warren, quarterback/receiver Xavier Castille and freshman linebacker Luke Termin.
Smith served as Rockwall ISD athletic director/Rockwall head coach since 2009. Rockwall announced Russ Reeves as its ISD athletic director two weeks ago. Reeves had been Denton ISD assistant athletic director the last six seasons.
