Girls' 5A Region II semifinals: Heartbreaker for Plano West; Skyline falls
Undefeated Pflugerville hits key free throws to win it
WACO — On paper, Plano West’s 64-63 loss to Pflugerville wasn’t that close.
West was outshot and outrebounded handily throughout Friday’s Class 5A Region II semifinal, but it was never outworked.
That work ethic rallied West from a 13-point second-half deficit, but Pflugerville’s Mykiel Burleson sank one of two free throws with 5.9 seconds remaining to break a tie and earn the win.
“We were one rebound away, one free throw away, one layup away — whatever you want to call it,” West coach Don Patterson said. “We were 10 down against the No. 2 team in the state and we tied it up. We just needed an offensive rebound.”
The game was tied when Burleson went up for a putback and got fouled by Randi Reinhardt. She missed her first free throw but converted the second to take the lead.
West still had some time left to try and win or tie the game in the final seconds. Freshman Natalie Chou dribbled toward the basket and dished out to Devri Owens, who got off an awkward shot that bounced off the side of the backboard as time expired.
No. 2 Pflugerville (37-0) advances to face the winner between Skyline and Spring Dekaney in the Region II finals at 6 p.m. Saturday.
West, ranked eighth in the state, trailed 51-41 at the start of the fourth quarter and quickly went on a 7-0 run. With 53 seconds remaining, Sydney Skinner tied the game at 63-63 with a pair of free throws.
“We won 36 games this year because we know how to win and we find ways to win,” Patterson said. “Tonight we came up a basket short.”
Five West players scored in double figures, and Owens led the way with 14 points. West forced 29 Pflugerville turnovers and converted them for 26 points.
Pflugerville will be looking for its first trip to the state tournament since 2009. It was 39-0 last year when it lost to The Woodlands in the regional quarterfinals.
Spring Dekaney 48, Skyline 45: Spring Dekaney handed Skyline a heartbreaking defeat in Friday’s Class 5A Region II semifinal at the Ferrell Center.
Skyline rallied its way from a 10-point deficit and took a 45-42 lead on Christalah Lyons’ jumper with 2:11 remaining in the game.
Skyline didn’t score again, though, and gave way to a 6-0 Dekaney run. Dekaney’s Jaely Richard-Harris made a layup, then stole the ball at midcourt and scored a runner to take the lead for good.
No. 9 Dekaney (34-3) advances to face No. 2 Pflugerville in the Region II finals at 6 p.m. Saturday.
Skyline (29-10) turned the ball over 25 times and was 4 for 11 from the free throw line. Dai’Ja Thomas scored a team-high 13 points, and Marina Lilly added 10.
Dekaney is the reigning Region II champion and lost to Duncanville in last year’s state championship.
Amber Driver led Dekaney with 13 points and three steals. Alexis Thomas added nine points and a team-high five rebounds.
