Boys basketball playoff roundup: Richardson advances on half-court buzzer beater; top-ranked DeSoto wins, will face No. 2 Hebron
Nylan Yancy banked in a shot from just beyond midcourt at the buzzer to give Richardson a 50-48 win over Mesquite in a Class 5A second-round playoff game Friday.
Leading by one, Mesquite missed the front end of a one-and-one free throw opportunity with 1.7 seconds left. Yancy got the rebound, took a couple of dribbles and hit the game-winner.
Mesquite (21-11), the District 12-5A champion, led by eight entering the fourth quarter before Richardson closed with a 14-4 run. Brandon Scott scored 16 of his game-high 27 points in the second half to help Richardson (25-10) rally.
Alex Cooper led Mesquite with 18 points. His layup with 16 seconds remaining gave Mesquite a one-point lead.
Richardson will play Plano East, the state’s fifth-ranked 5A team, in a regional quarterfinal at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Plano.
In other area-round games:
DeSoto 69, Coppell 41: Duke signee Matt Jones scored a game-high 22 points, and Takedrick Brown added 13 for the state’s top-ranked 5A team. DeSoto (33-2) will play Hebron, the state’s second-ranked team, in a 5A Region I quarterfinal.
South Grand Prairie 64, Colleyville Heritage 43: Jalon Anderson scored 17 points, and Virginia Tech signee Ben Emelogu scored 12 of his 14 points in the fourth quarter for SGP (33-3), the state’s fourth-ranked 5A team.
North Crowley 50, El Paso Montwood 47 (OT): Torrence Neal hit a 3-pointer early in overtime to give North Crowley the lead for good, and the state’s 10th-ranked 5A team went on to beat Montwood (27-5). Jalan McCloud scored a game-high 16 points for North Crowley (28-7).
Arlington Martin 63, Odessa Permian 36: Patrick Burke scored 13 points, and Andrew Dotson added 12 for Martin, the state’s 21st-ranked 5A team.
Kimball 74, Carrollton Newman Smith 57: Keith Frazier had 24 points and 14 rebounds, and Kimball’s rugged and physical play was too much for Carrollton Newman Smith.
Kimball, trying to win a third consecutive 4A state title, used a pair of scoring runs in the third quarter to turn a four-point halftime lead into a 10-point edge going to the fourth quarter.
Newman Smith rallied behind Walter Rickett (21 points, 11 rebounds) in the fourth quarter, cutting the Kimball lead to 55-50 with 5:30 remaining. However, Kimball pushed the lead back to 10 with just over three minutes to play and then cruised to final win.
Trent Brinkley added 19 points and 11 rebounds for Kimball, and D’Angelo Allen had 14 points and 11 rebounds.
Lincoln 64, Frisco 51: Erick Neal made five 3-pointers, scored 19 points and had seven assists and eight steals for Lincoln (28-6), the state’s third-ranked 4A team. Mark Johnson added 17 points and 11 rebounds. Lincoln held Frisco to four field goals in the second half.
Woodrow Wilson 74, Little Elm 71 (2 OT): Sophomores Dennis Shouse, Hassan Thomas and Craig Martin combined for 23 points and made key plays down the stretch to help Woodrow Wilson (25-7) beat Little Elm (24-8) in double overtime. Woodrow Wilson, ranked seventh in the state in 4A, will play West Mesquite at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Ellis Davis Field House.
Wyoming signee Trey Washington scored 19 points, and Chance Houston added 14 for Woodrow Wilson. Devante’ Pullum scored 37 points for Little Elm.
McKinney North 55, Jacksonville 45: Julion Pearre scored 16 of his 20 points in the fourth quarter for McKinney North.
Arlington Seguin 73, Wylie 43: TCU signee Brandon Parrish scored 19 for Seguin (31-4), the state’s fourth-ranked 4A team.
Kendal Yancy-Harris, Richardson Berkner, point guard: Had a triple-double with 14 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds as the state’s eight-ranked 5A team beat Mesquite Horn, 81-54. Fresno State signee Soma Edo (19 points, 13 rebounds) and Keenan Evans (17 points, 10 rebounds) had double-doubles for Berkner (30-5).
Keyunta Watkins, Trophy Club Byron Nelson, guard: Scored a game-high 22 points and made a game-winning layup at the buzzer to give the state’s 12th-ranked 4A team a 47-45 win over 17th-ranked Waco University. Emmanuel Nzekwesi added 18 points and 10 rebounds for Byron Nelson (28-5).
Braylon Rayson, West Mesquite, guard: The Central Michigan signee scored a game-high 24 points to help West Mesquite (25-9) to a 55-46 win over Hillcrest (12-20). Hillcrest, the No. 4 seed from District 12-4A, was coming off a win over Carter, the state’s second-ranked 4A team.
Kevin Hervey, Arlington Bowie, forward: Came off the bench to score a game-high 20 points to lead Bowie to a 52-33 win over El Paso Coronado, the state’s ninth-ranked 5A team. Weber State signee Jeremy Senglin added 13 points for Bowie.
