5A-II regional wrestling meet has stacked field; 5A-III regional swimming meet features top talent
Lake Highlands is coming off a sixth consecutive district championship with a pair of potential individual state contenders heading into the Class 5A Region II meet at Allen beginning Friday. Finals start at 4 p.m. Saturday.
With perennial power Allen hosting the meet, each of the top four individual qualifiers in each weight class will come through highly regarded competition.
“With Allen having state-level quality in every [weight] class, that leaves us and everybody kind of dividing up the rest of the spots,” Lake Highlands coach Pete Grieder said. “Most would say we have the state’s toughest region. Nearly everybody coming out of here has a chance at state.”
Allen is the defending 5A state champion. Flower Mound, competing in Region I, took third last season while Lake Highlands was fourth. The state meet has expanded to include a Class 4A bracket this year.
Lake Highlands senior D’Andre Brumfield hopes to return to state in the 113-pound division. Brumfield lost to Saginaw’s Brice Bassinger in the 106-pound final last season.
Lake Highlands junior Thayer Atkins also is considered a top contender in the 120-pound division.
Atkins is an experienced select wrestler, but Brumfield — like many in the Lake Highlands program — was introduced to the sport in Grieder’s program.
Rockwall and Rockwall-Heath’s blossoming programs jump into the deep water this weekend.
Moving up to Class 5A, Rockwall and Heath host the Class 5A Region III swimming and diving meet, which includes top state programs including Plano, Plano West, Plano East, Tyler Lee, McKinney Boyd and Richardson Pearce.
Rockwall is hosting its first regional meet at its 34-year-old, $17 million Aquatics Center. Rockwall and Heath have done well competing in Class 4A, but 5A swimmers have more experience in national and even international experience.
“Our focus has been on mental preparation,” Heath coach Tommy Sacco said. “There will be fast swimmers in every lane in Class 5A.”
Heath took second in its district meet behind Tyler Lee, but junior Jared Butler and freshman Harper Gillentine were named swimmers of the meet for boys and girls, respectively.
A swimmer for only two years, Butler totaled 230 points with a first place in the 200-yard freestyle (one minute, 46.40 seconds) and a first in the 500-yard freestyle (4:53.37).
He also helped Heath take first in the 200 freestyle relay and a second in the 400 freestyle relay.
Gillentine scored 215 points with a first place in the 100-yard freestyle (55.22) and a second place showing in the 50-yard freestyle (25.90).
