Keller Timber Creek girls top Fossil Ridge to grab final playoff spot in 4-5A
FORT WORTH — Emily Spector knows she has a job to do on the Keller Timber Creek girls basketball team.
“It’s my job to score,” said Spector, a senior guard. “And if I can’t score, I have to penetrate and get someone else to score.”
Spector rattled off seven consecutive points to open the second half and steer Timber Creek to a 49-39 victory against visiting Keller Fossil Ridge on Tuesday.
It was a winner-take-all game for District 4-5A’s final playoff spot. Timber Creek (20-12, 8-6 District 4-5A) will advance to the playoffs for the third consecutive season.
Fossil Ridge (18-14, 7-7 District 4-5A) will be one of the best Class 5A teams staying home when the playoffs begin.
“My kids played really hard,” Fossil Ridge coach Stacy Henson said. “Defensively, we dictated what [Timber Creek was] going to do on offense, but we just couldn’t make a basket.”
Spector’s dynamic opening to the third quarter followed an ugly first half on both sides. Timber Creek and Fossil Ridge combined for 15 fouls, 26 turnovers and 33 percent shooting, and the score was rightfully tied, 21-21.
Spector came out and hit two layups inside of a minute, then capped the 7-0 run with a 3-pointer. Timber Creek went up 28-21 and never looked back.
“She’s the one kid that won’t let us lose,” Timber Creek coach Tina DeMichele said of Spector. “In a big game she calms everybody down, and when she did that I knew we were going to be OK.”
Spector and Tori Frigaard had 14 points apiece to pace Timber Creek. Madison Crawford led Fossil Ridge with nine points.
Timber Creek will face District 3-5A champion Arlington Bowie in a bi-district playoff at 7 p.m. Monday at Birdville’s Thomas Coliseum.
