Caroline Gonzalez's 21 points help Heritage close out MacArthur, close in on 6-5A title

COLLEYVILLE — Caroline Gonzalez lurked around the free throw line throughout Colleyville Heritage’s 51-43 victory against Irving MacArthur on Tuesday.

The Heritage senior forward used her dynamic midrange game to score a game-high 21 points and put Heritage in the driver’s seat in District 6-5A.

“It’s a sweet win,” said Gonzalez, who also had a team-high 15 rebounds. “They’d had Alexis Jones all those years, and they had a lot of skill this year, too, but we knew this was our chance and we pulled through.”

Heritage (23-10, 11-1) went 14-2 in district the last two seasons, with its only losses coming against Irving MacArthur. Heritage swept the season series this season and needs only a win against Irving or Irving Nimitz in its final two games to clinch a share of the title.

Heritage coach Dianna Sager knew Gonzalez would have an opportunity to take over the game in the middle. Guards Victoria Bratcher and Heather Roberts poured in 3s and combined for 39 points when the teams last met earlier this month.

With MacArthur worried about preventing the 3 again, Gonzalez was left open in the lane.

“She’s pretty good from there,” Sager said. “She’s had an incredible year and she’s definitely the one that can put the team on her back.”

Tory Jacobs led Irving MacArthur with 19 points, and speedy guard Tana Driver chipped in 14.

MacArthur (25-7) fell into a second-place tie with Hurst L.D. Bell at 10-2 in district.
