Mesquite Horn girls lose 18-point lead in fourth quarter but take 46-44 win over rival Mesquite
MESQUITE — Mesquite Horn surrendered an 18-point fourth-quarter lead but held on to beat host Mesquite, 46-44, in a key District 12-5A showdown.
Mesquite’s Brianna Williams buried a 3-pointer with 1:17 remaining to tie the score at 41-41. The basket capped a 19-1 rally for Mesquite, which trailed 40-22 early in the fourth quarter.
But Horn guard Kristina Smith followed with a layup and a free throw, and forward Lauren Bradshaw sank a short jumper to bury Mesquite’s hopes of a dramatic comeback win.
“We have a lot to work on,” Horn coach Kasie Brewer said. “This is our rival, and there’s a lot of emotion. We have got to do a better job when the other team has a run to stop that and be persistent.”
Horn’s victory gave it sole possession of first place in 12-5A with a 7-1 district record. Horn is 19-6 overall.
Mesquite (17-11, 6-2) fell into a second-place tie with Rockwall.
Williams made another 3 for Mesquite in the final two seconds, but it came too late to mount another comeback.
Mesquite trailed 15-1 after an ugly first quarter in which it was 0-for-11 from the field. The margin didn’t change much until Mesquite’s fourth-quarter comeback began.
“They kind of pulled their heads out and had a little more heart than what they had the first half,” Mesquite coach Jan Newland Littlefield said. “Instead of playing scared, they played like they are capable of playing.”
The tough first quarter, though, was far less damaging than Mesquite’s 12-for-27 performance from the free throw line. Mesquite was also just 4-for-20 from 3-point range.
The game was similar to the first meeting of the two rivals. Horn surrendered a 10-point halftime lead in the third quarter of that 46-41 victory last month.
Smith led Horn on Friday with 15 points, and Bradshaw joined her in double figures with 12.
Williams led Mesquite with 18 points, and Viershanie Latham chipped in 10.
