Richardson's quick start too much for Mesquite, 67-53, in Plano Wildcat Holiday Classic final
PLANO — Brandon Scott scored 15 of his game-high 24 points in the second half as Richardson raced to a 67-53 win over Mesquite in the Plano Wildcat Holiday Classic Championship game. Scott was named the tourney’s MVP.
Richardson (14-7) opened the game on a blistering pace, hitting nine of 13 shots, including going 5-of-6 from 3-point range in the first quarter. Eric Johnson scored 11 in the quarter with a pair from long range and finishing off a three-point play at the free throw line in the closing seconds.
Mesquite (11-8) which opened the season 0-3 while awaiting its football players to join the team, showed its mettle with a 13-1 run to close the second quarter. Alex Cooper, who quarterbacked the football team to he playoffs, scored seven of his 12 points in the second quarter.
Javante Wilson also kept Mesquite in the game with 11 first-half points. He finished with 13 points and 14 rebounds. Cooper and Wilson were named to the all-tournament team.
Mesquite pulled to within 45-40, but Richardson responded with Scott and Jordan Walker scoring 15 of the teams’ final 22 points. Johnson finished with 14 and Walker added nine points for Richardson.
Jesuit 50, Plano 45: Steven Spieth scored nine of his 16 points in the fourth quarter, going 7-of-7 from the free throw line, to lead Jesuit over Plano in the third-place game.
Jesuit (14-4), the state’s 14th-ranked Class 5A team, dominated early, highlighted by Spieth’s baseline dunk for a 19-6 lead.
Plano (11-8) senior Dustin Bercutt scored 10 of his 12 points in the second half as Plano pulled even before Spieth, a member of the all-tourney team, put it away.
