Duncanville trounces weary Plano West, 64-32, in Sandra Meadows Classic title game

DUNCANVILLE — Duncanville and Plano West were the predictable choices to reach Saturday’s championship at the Sandra Meadows Classic.

The outcome of their game, though, was hardly predictable.

No. 1 Duncanville trounced No. 3 Plano West in a 64-32 blowout, winning its own tournament for the second year in a row.

“We just came out with a mind-set to put it away early,” tournament MVP Kiara Perry said, “and that’s what we did.”

Perry scored a game-high 18 points and was one of four Duncanville players in double figures.

Plano West, which beat Clear Springs in five overtimes Friday night and survived a close game against No. 9 DeSoto in the semifinals earlier Saturday, struggled for long stretches.

Duncanville used a 12-0 run in the second quarter to take a 39-21 lead into halftime. Four different players scored during the run, which began with a 3-pointer from offensive MVP Ariel Atkins.

Plano West made only two field goals in the second quarter, and those baskets were nearly six minutes apart.

Duncanville’s momentum carried into the second half, when it opened on a 10-0 run to add even more distance in an already lopsided game.

“One thing we say at Plano West is we have no excuses,” Plano West coach Don Patterson said. “We come to play, we play hard and that’s good enough most of the time. Tonight it wasn’t.”

Duncanville (25-0) has handed Plano West its only two losses this season. The first meeting — a 61-55 Duncanville win — was substantially closer than Saturday’s blowout.

“They were tired,” Duncanville coach Cathy Self-Morgan said of West. “They played five overtimes yesterday and another game this morning. I know they’re a lot stronger than that. Hopefully we’ll see them again at state.”

Duncanville hasn’t lost since Dec. 3, 2011, a 58-50 loss to Plano West. It’s a heavy favorite to win a second straight 5A championship, and it showed why Saturday night.

DeSoto 60, Overton (Tenn.) 57 (OT): No. 9 DeSoto relinquished a 17-point lead in regulation but outlasted Overton (Tenn.) in overtime for third place at the Sandra Meadows Classic.

DeSoto junior forward Brianna Wise hit a 3-pointer that proved to be the game-winner with 22 seconds remaining in overtime.

Overton’s Philecia Atkins got off two 3-point shots during the final possession but couldn’t get either to fall.

DeSoto (21-4) led 28-11 midway through the second quarter, but that lead gradually shrank as the game wore on. DeSoto made only one field goal in the fourth quarter and was outscored 13-3 in the period.

Overton, which finished in fourth place, never possessed the lead. Fontalla Walker scored a game-high 17 points.

Wise led DeSoto with 16 points, and Camesha Davis added 14.
