Guyer advances to 4A-I state finals after Tyler takes late lead thanks to recovering 2 onside kicks
MIDLOTHIAN — Denton Guyer’s state semifinal game with John Tyler was all but over with just under seven minutes in the fourth quarter when Guyer took a 19 point lead Friday night at Midlothian’s MISD Multi-Purpose Stadium. Then lightning in a bottle happened. Twice.
John Tyler recovered two onside kicks, to take the lead with 3:44 left. Guyer regrouped with a touchdown and an interception by Terence Belton to seal the win, 57-53.
Denton Guyer will play the winner of Saturday’s game between Georgetown and Leander Rouse in the state final at Cowboys stadium.
John Tyler battled all the way back, recovering two consecutive onside kicks in the midst of scoring 22 straight points in 2:05. John Tyler then kicked it deep, and Denton Guyer used a 12-play drive in 1:30 to take a lead.
On John Tyler’s first play of its ensuing drive Belton intercepted a pass up the middle to secure the win.
The teams combined for nine touchdowns in 9:28. The teams combined for 63 points in the fourth quarter. John Tyler scored 36, Denton Guyer 27.
With John Tyler trailing 50-38, it recovered an onside kick by Tyus Bowser and used a five-play drive to score. It then went for another onside kick. Receiver Fred Ross made another recovery. Tyler’s DeQuante Woods scored one play later on a 34-yards pass.
But it wasn’t enough as Guyer’s Jerrod Heard, who led the team down the field.
Heard had 318 yards rushing and four touchdowns. Guyer running back DJ Breedlove had 168 yards and two touchdowns and running back Richard Whitaker 116 yards and two touchdowns, including the game clinching score.
John Tyler’s Flowers had 163 yards receiving and a touchdown while and Justice Liggins had 144 receiving yards and a touchdown.
