DeSoto coach Claude Mathis OK with no Skyline rematch: 'I’m tired of the fighting before the game and the disrespecting'
Forget about history, tradition and rivalries.
DeSoto will face Allen in the 5A Division I state semifinals next weekend, a matchup without a very high-profile storyline.
The alternative for DeSoto would have been a much-anticipated rematch against Skyline, one of the strongest rivalries in the Dallas area.
DeSoto coach Claude Mathis hoped to avoid a confrontation with Skyline, and he got his wish.
“We’ve battled with Skyline,” Mathis said. “Let’s have some fun with this thing. I’m tired of the fighting (with Skyline) before the game and the disrespecting. I just want a classic, great high school game.”
The Allen-DeSoto semifinal is tentatively scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday at SMU.
Allen (13-1) and DeSoto (14-0) have both spent time atop SportsDay’s Class 5A rankings this year. Allen fell from the top spot after a week four loss to Coppell, and DeSoto was No. 1 for the rest of the regular season.
Allen and DeSoto have three shared opponents this season: Southlake Carroll, Cedar Hill and Coppell.
DeSoto beat all three, and Allen lost only to Coppell.
“I haven’t seen Allen play but I know they’re a good team,” DeSoto running back Dontre Wilson said. “They lost to Coppell and we beat them 42-14, but we can’t go out there and underestimate them.”
DeSoto’s dramatic 49-45 win against Southlake Carroll in Saturday’s Region I final was its narrowest margin of victory this season.
Allen limited Skyline to 17 points in a 37-17 victory, which was by far Skyline’s lowest offensive output this year.
It’s hard to know what sort of game to expect when Allen and DeSoto clash next week, especially with no recent meetings to draw from.
"If it's a shootout, it's a shootout,” Allen quarterback Kyler Murray said. “But we're going to try to go in there and dominate. That's what we do every week."
