Another big-time week of HS football playoffs on tap; 3 of 4 state semis in 5A, 4A to be played in Dallas area

MESQUITE — Shortly after Allen’s 37-17 win on Saturday over Skyline, Allen coach Tom Westerberg revealed his state semifinal game will take place at SMU’s Ford Stadium on Saturday night at 6 p.m.

Unaware of just how DeSoto won its regional final game with a goal line stand, Westerberg had no qualms about allowing DeSoto to return to the site of its instant-classic win over Southlake Carroll.

“No not at all,” Westerberg said. “We’ve played there quite a few times. It’s a big enough stadium to hold it and it will be a lot of fun.”

Cowboys Stadium wasn’t available this week due the Class 3A, Division I State Championship game on Friday and private functions on Saturday, leaving state semifinalists to find other sites.

All four of the 5A and 4A Region I vs. Region II semifinals feature at least one Dallas area team: Allen and DeSoto in Class 5A Division I; Cedar Hill in 5A, Division II; Denton Guyer in 4A, Division I; and Lancaster in 4A, Division II.

That makes for plenty of games nearby. Three of the four semifinals will be in the Dallas area. The only one that won’t: Cedar Hill’s game against Austin Westlake, slated for 2 p.m. Saturday in Waco at Waco ISD Stadium.

The 4A Division I and Division II semifinals featuring area teams will take place simultaneously on Friday at 7:30 p.m. In Division I, Denton Guyer’s tilt with Tyler John Tyler will take place at Midlothian’s MISD Multi-purpose stadium. The Division II matchup between Lancaster and Wichita Falls Rider will take place at Justin’s Northwest ISD Stadium.
