Lightning-quick scores put Corsicana Mildred in 2A-II state semis
ALEDO — Mildred scored twice in two minutes in the second half in a 45-35 victory over Nocona in a Class 2A Division II state quarterfinal at Aledo’s Bearcat Stadium. Mildred will play Sonora (11-3) at 7:30 p.m. next Friday at Marble Falls.
Mildred took a 38-35 lead late in the third quarter as junior running back Draylon Sterling burst up the middle for a 53-yard touchdown run. Less than a minute later, Mildred’s Raleigh Seilheimer had an interception at Nocona’s 34. Mildred took 38-28 lead on a 30-yard touchdown run by Jeremy Ballard.
Nocona (12-1), having a school-record march in the playoffs, cut the lead to 38-35 with six minutes left on a 1-yard run by Bryce Dingler. Nocona controlled possession with 80 plays to Mildred’s 42.
But total yards were almost even with Nocona at 394 and Mildred at 374. Ballard scored on a 3-yard run in the final two minutes to give Mildred its 10-point margin.
Mildred’s big-play offense was led by Sterling, who had 98 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Quarterback Nic Shimonek, committed to Iowa, passed for 212 yards and two touchdowns.
