Duncanville girls stay perfect (14-0) in winning Collin County Roundball Classic

MCKINNEY — The Duncanville girls’ basketball team was looking for revenge Saturday at the Collin County Roundball Classic.

Last season, Plano West was the only Texas team to defeat Duncanville, who went on to finish 40-1 and win its seventh state title.

It was evident during the third quarter that last year’s loss at the Roundball Classic would be avenged.

Duncanville held Plano West to five points during those eight minutes, the deciding factor in a 61-55 victory at McKinney Boyd.

“They remember it,” Duncanville coach Cathy Self-Morgan said. “They remembered it so much that they almost overlooked Lincoln [in the semifinals]. They wanted to get to Plano West because Plano West had already won.”

Behind six first half three-pointers, two each from seniors Allison Staley and Devri Owens, Plano West (15-1) managed to stay within three points of the state’s No. 1 5A team, according to the most recent TABC rankings. Plano West is ranked third.

Self-Morgan said the halftime message was to improve defensively, and Duncanville (14-0) responded. Senior Kiara Perry, who signed last month to play at SMU, came alive during the first five minutes of the third quarter, scoring seven of her team-high 15 as Duncanville pulled ahead by 10.

With six minutes remaining, Perry, who was named the tournament MVP, put back an offensive rebound to give Duncanville its largest lead, 56-41. Plano West closed the margin by going 8-of-11 from the free throw line during the final 5:19.

Junior Tasia Foman also netted 15 for Duncanville, which included three three-pointers in the first half.

“I’m proud of them,” Self-Morgan said. “We did what we wanted to do. We went home with our tails tucked last year. That hurt last year.”
