Touchdown in final minute lifts Wylie East to wild win over Whitehouse, 63-56, in area round of playoffs
GARLAND — Wylie East and Whitehouse were locked in a video-game-style shootout for the majority of Friday’s night game, but it was the ground game that saved Wylie East in the end.
Junior Kevon Mack scored on a 6-yard run with 41 seconds left to lift Wylie East to a wild 63-56 4A Division II Region II area-round playoff victory at Homer B. Johnson Stadium.
Wylie East (9-3) will play Mesquite Poteet, which defeated Lincoln 48-14. Whitehouse finished the season 10-2.
Mack came into the game in the final minutes when starter Jabari Anderson headed to the sideline with what looked to be cramps or a leg injury. Before his final carry, Anderson had rushed for 384 yards on 49 carries.
The play of the game came on that drive when Wylie East faced a third-and-11 at the Whitehouse 46. Quarterback Garrett McCain’s pass to Marcell Ateman was well-defended and batted up in the air by defensive back Colby Campbell at the 18.
But Ateman came down with the ball. From there, Mack ran 12 yards to the 6, then scored on the next play.
Wylie East’s defense made its final stop but not before Whitehouse pulled out the stops with laterals and passes on the game’s final play. Dylan Cantrell was downed at the Whitehouse 46 at the end.
McCain hit 13 of 29 passes for 227 yards and three touchdowns. Ateman caught 11 passes for 192 yards.Follow Tommy Cummings on Twitter at @tommycummings.
