Stiff wind helps Mesquite Poteet jump out to early lead, blow past Lincoln
MESQUITE — Getting advice from his Heisman Trophy-winning uncle, Tim Brown, Mesquite Poteet junior receiver Kody Edwards has blossomed into a key part of Poteet’s potent offense.
Edwards caught two of Tanner Ramsey’s four touchdown passes Friday in Poteet’s 48-14 victory over Lincoln in a Class 4A Division II area-round playoff game at Memorial Stadium.
Edwards scored on passes of 28 and 63 yards, and Ramsey threw for 311 yards on 15-of-18 passing. Edwards and senior receiver Rodney Douglas each had more than 100 yards receiving.
“Kody wears [Brown’s] No. 81,” Poteet coach Randy Jackson said. “We like to be balanced. Sometimes we’ll throw to eight guys in a game. We have a lot of guys who can make big plays, and Kody is one who can.”
Poteet (10-2) took advantage a 20-mph wind at its back to take a 21-0 first-quarter lead. The third touchdown was set up by an onside kick.
“I’m a momentum guy,” Jackson said. “We got lucky and got the wind to start. We jumped out to a lead. I said, ‘Let’s go for the onside kick,’ and [my assistants] told me, ‘You know our kicker is hurt?’ We had a kicker [Derrick Davis] rattling out of the box from junior varsity go out and do a great job. You have to go by what you’re feeling.”
Trailing by three scores, Lincoln scored on its first possession with the wind behind it on junior quarterback Erick Neal’s 3-yard touchdown run. Neal connected with his twin brother, receiver Derrick, for five receptions for 87 yards. But Lincoln (10-2) couldn’t maintain many drives against Poteet’s swarming defense that was led by sophomore linebacker Malik Jefferson.
Poteet put together a 99-yard, 72-second drive to take a 35-6 lead at halftime. Poteet senior free safety Raffaele Gaines started a 14-point swing with an interception at Poteet’s 1-yard line. Poteet, mixing runs with a variety of quick-hitting, outside screens, quickly moved to midfield with two runs by junior running back James Swindle for 20 yards, a pair of Lincoln penalties and two Ramsey passes for 16 yards.
Ramsey then found a wide-open Douglas streaking uncovered just outside the left hashmark for a 42-yard touchdown pass to give Poteet a 29-point lead.
Edwards’ 28-yard touchdown pass from Ramsey gave Poteet a 28-6 lead in the second quarter. Edwards’ 63-yard scoring catch gave Poteet a 41-6 lead in the third quarter.
