Plano West rushes for 417 yards -- 273 by Sotonya Jamabo -- to clinch playoff berth with win over Plano East
PLANO — Plano West kept its playoff hopes alive last weekend by running its way to a come-from-behind victory against Plano.
West kept on running Friday night and clinched that postseason berth with a 47-28 victory against District 10-5A rival Plano East at Clark Stadium.
Junior running back Sotonya Jamabo ran for 273 of West’s 417 rushing yards. He also scored two touchdowns. Quarterback Travis Korry added 127 yards on the ground and four touchdowns.
“The seniors here have never been to the playoffs,” Jamabo said. “We went out there and did it for them. There’s no better feeling than this.”
Plano West will face Lake Highlands in a Class 5A Division II bi-district playoff next weekend. Lake Highlands took second place behind Skyline in District 9-5A.
West (6-4, 3-2) will be making its first playoff appearance since 2009.
“We’re playing good football right now,” West coach Mike Hughes said. “We’re peaking at the right time, and we beat a good team tonight.”
Plano East, which needed a win just to have a chance at a playoff berth, finished its season 5-4 overall and 1-4 in district. It opened the season 4-0 and then lost four of its final five games.
West could have still made the playoffs with a loss Friday night, but it looked determined to win its way in from the opening kickoff.
Korry capped an eight-play opening drive with a 10-yard touchdown run, then West converted a two-point attempt for an 8-0 lead. The next West series was nearly identical. Korry finished an eight-play drive with an 11-yard score, and West converted another two-point attempt for a 16-0 lead.
West passed the ball only twice on those two scoring drives.
“We knew we were going to pound it on them, and that’s what we did,” Jamabo said. “We just kept going and going.”
West has run for 707 yards in its last two wins.
East quarterback Mario Smalls threw for 374 yards and three touchdowns. Wide receiver Collin Shaw caught 12 passes for 190 yards and two touchdowns.
