Corbett Smith's notable Week 10 HS football games, predictions

Plano East vs. Plano West

John Clark Stadium (KVCE-AM 1160): Plano East coach Johnny Ringo preaches that his program's success is built on more than just one player. It's a collective effort, from the coaching staff down to the fans, he said. But Ringo acknowledged just how important senior quarterback Mario Smalls has been this season. "He's really made such a huge difference, for us to be able to go out and execute our game plan," Ringo said. Smalls kept Plano East's playoff hopes alive last week with a 22-20 win over McKinney Boyd, passing for 308 yards in his first game back from a broken fibula suffered in a game on Sept. 21. Smalls wasn't cleared by doctors until a day before the game, practicing throws earlier in the week in a protective boot. Plano East is 5-0 in Smalls' starts, and 0-4 without him. Plano West (5-4, 2-2) is in the playoffs with a win; East (5-4, 1-3) needs a win to stay alive in the district's point-differential tiebreakers. Plano East 27, Plano West 24

Arlington Bowie vs. Arlington Martin

7 p.m. Thursday, Wilemon Field (Ch. 21): Arlington Martin (7-2, 6-0) and Arlington Bowie (8-1, 6-0) face off for the 3-5A title. But the bigger prize might be on the horizon. The winner will clinch the top spot from the district in the 5A Division I playoffs, while the loser gets defending 5A Division I champion Southlake Carroll in the bi-district round. Both teams are propelled by the play of their untraditional quarterbacks. Martin has relied on a Wildcat package all season, using Texas pledge Kyle Hicks as the team's primary passer. Hicks, who is expected back at full strength after missing last week's game, has been tremendously effective in that role, completing 69 percent of his passes for 470 yards and six touchdowns. He's also rushed for 1,106 yards and 22 scores. Bowie sophomore quarterback Tony James started the season at slot receiver, pressed into action in Week 1 after starting QB Keaton Perry tore his ACL against Mesquite. James has passed for 1,229 yards and 13 touchdowns, with just five interceptions, while rushing for 11 touchdowns. Arlington Bowie 42, Arlington Martin 39

Poteet (8-1, 5-1) is averaging 42.6 points per game, and allowing 225.1 yards total offense. Poteet 27, West Mesquite 20

Cedar Hill at Midlothian

MISD Multi-Purpose Stadium: While Cedar Hill (5-4, 4-2) and Midlothian (7-2, 4-2) have clinched playoff berths, the District 7-5A top seed in 5A Division II is at stake. The winner avoids a first-round playoff match-up with undefeated Waco Midway. The loser, though, might get Copperas Cove. Cedar Hill 35, Midlothian 25

Kimball vs. South Oak Cliff

Kincaide Stadium: Kimball (7-2, 5-1) and South Oak Cliff (9-0, 6-0) have been alternating wins in this series back to 2006. SOC can win the 11-4A title outright and clinch either the top seed in either 4A Division I or II. Kimball can only clinch a share of the district crown. South Oak Cliff 24, Kimball 20

Wylie East at Lovejoy

Leopard Stadium (KFCD-AM 990): A win will give either Wylie East (7-2, 5-1) or Lovejoy (9-0, 6-0) the 13-4A top seed in the 4A Division II playoffs. Wylie East RB Jabari Anderson had three 100-yard games in his last four starts. Lovejoy is shooting for its first undefeated regular season ever. Wylie East 42, Lovejoy 38

Lion Memorial Stadium: Waxahachie (5-4, 3-3) needs a win or losses by Mansfield Summit and Arlington Seguin to make the playoffs. Ennis (8-1, 5-1) still has a shot at the district title, and is looking to rebound from a 51-14 loss to Lancaster last week, a game in which it had five turnovers. Waxahachie 31, Ennis 28

Denton Ryan at Flower Mound

Neal Wilson Athletic Stadium: Quarterback Mitchell Bridges, beset with a fractured fibula and knee injury this season, is expected to start for Ryan (4-4, 2-2), which can clinch a 5A Division II spot with a win. Flower Mound (3-6, 1-3) can get in the playoffs with a 13-point win, or a win and FM Marcus win. Ryan 28, Flower Mound 14

Irving MacArthur vs. Irving

Irving Schools Stadium: Irving MacArthur (6-2, 4-2 in 6-5A) and Irving (3-6, 3-3) could end up in a three-way tie with Hurst .D. Bell for the final two playoff spots, resulting in coin flips. With an L.D. Bell loss to Colleyville Heritage, Irving would need a 17-point win to force that scenario. MacArthur 48, Irving 17

Argyle at Celina

Bobcat Stadium: The area's top 3A programs face off for the 10-3A title. Argyle (8-1, 3-0) has outscored its opponents in three district games, 179-6. Celina (8-1, 3-0) has clinched a playoff berth for 19 straight seasons, one of the longest streaks in state history. Argyle 30, Celina 20
