Volleyball playoff roundup: Coppell beats Hebron in 3; McKinney Boyd stops Plano West
LEWISVILLE — Coppell and Hebron added another high-tension chapter to their volleyball history Tuesday.
Coppell ousted Hebron, 25-22, 25-23, 25-22, in the 5A regional quarterfinal at Lewisville. Coppell advances to the 5A Region I semifinals against Arlington 8 p.m. Friday at Glen Rose.
Even with a 3-0 match victory, defending Class 5A state champ Coppell (45-3) had to rally in each set to hold off Hebron, which had split its district series with Coppell.
Hebron (26-16) lost for the second-consecutive season to Coppell in the regional quarterfinal. Hebron won the 2010 5A state title.
“We had to settle ourselves and play in the moment,” Coppell coach Julie Green said. “Our older girls stepped up. It was a crazy atmosphere. Our fans our great, Hebron had good fans. That gets a lot of adrenaline going.”
Coppell rallied behind its seniors Erica Bohannon and Chiaka Ogbogu to win each set.
“We don’t have the big hitters Coppell has,” Hebron coach Karin Keeney said. “We’ve got a lot of young players, and we’ve called ourselves the ‘average joes’ all year. We were trying to be aggressive but there were some nerves in there. I think we had 11 net violations, which we hadn’t done all year.”
In Game 1, Hebron built a 16-9 lead before Coppell tied the score 16-16. After being tied at 21, Coppell won five of the last six points. Junior Mary-Kate Marshall got the 24th point on a kill and served for the 25th.
“We’ve had one goal all year and that is to win state,” Ogbogu said. “The pressure is building a little with each game, but that just gets us fired up. We enjoy it.”
Hebron senior Micaela Spann, who has orally committed to Oklahoma, was instrumental in Hebron jumping out to a 13-10 lead in Game 2. But Coppell got kills from the 6-1 high-jumping Ogbogu, a Texas commitment, and strong play from Bohannon (Tulsa-bound), Cassidy Pickrell (UC-Irvine) and setter Kylie Pickrell to lead a comeback.
In Game 3, Hebron, playing with multiple juniors and sophomores, jumped out to a 5-1 edge. With the score tied at 17, Coppell went on an 8-5 run to close out the match.
