Richardson (570 yards rushing) bulls past Berkner, 47-35, to clinch playoff spot
Cameron Booty rushed for 226 yards and four touchdowns to lead Richardson to a playoff-clinching win over Richardson Berkner, 47-35, at Wildcat-Ram Stadium.
Devante Branch, who rushed for 183 yards, sealed the win with a 3-yard touchdown run with 3:55 left.
Berkner had pulled within six points, 41-35, with 8:09 to play on Calvin Jones’ fifth touchdown. Jones finished with 120 yards rushing and 79 receiving.
Richardson (4-5, 4-2 District 9-5A) came into the game needing a win and a Jesuit win over Sunset to secure a playoff berth. Jesuit beat Sunset, 68-6, while Berkner (4-5, 3-3) was eliminated from playoff contention with the loss.
Richardson’s relentless running game was the difference. Of Richardson’s 584 yards, 570 came on the ground.
In addition to Booty and Branch, Richardson had another 100-yard rusher in quarterback Parker Smith, who had 104 yards and a touchdown on eight carries. Smith suffered an injury just before halftime and was replaced by Michael Curtis in the second half.
“We just had great balance, and we had great will,” Richardson coach Brian Chandler said. “We were just determined to run the ball, and it paid off for us.”
Berkner took a one-point lead just before halftime, but Richardson scored on its first possession of the second half for a 34-28 lead, and it never trailed again. Berkner had a chance to reclaim the lead, but on fourth-and-goal at the 9, quarterback Yedidiah Louis was intercepted by Kimbrick Jones in the end zone.
Louis led Berkner with 160 yards on 24 carries while also passing for 131 yards. Calvin Jones rushed for 120 yards and four TDs in addition to 79 yards and a touchdown as a receiver.
Berkner rallied to overcome a 21-7 deficit in the final 8:58 of the first half.
Berkner cut Richardson’s lead to seven on a Calvin Jones touchdown with 8:03 left, but Richardson’s Parker Smith broke a 52-yard touchdown run to push the lead back to 13 points.
Jones scored again on a 51-yard run to cut Richardson’s lead to 27-21 with 3:48 left, then Berkner’s Chris Wilkins recovered a fumble with 2:05 remaining.
That was enough time for Berkner to cover 51 yards in 11 plays for the go-ahead score. The key play was a 22-yard scramble by Louis on fourth-and-22 to set up Jones’ 5-yard touchdown plunge with 10 seconds left. The extra point gave Berkner a 28-27 lead at halftime.
