Plano, with 393 rushing yards, bulls past rival Plano East; injured TE Cody Verhulst expected to be OK
PLANO — Braylan Campbell rushed for 202 yards and two touchdowns to lead Plano in a 42-12 domination of crosstown rival Plano East on Friday at Clark Stadium.
Andre Morman rushed for 138 yards and a touchdown to give Plano two 100-yard rushers. Plano amassed 393 rushing yards and did not give up a point until midway through the third quarter.
The win puts Plano at 2-1 in District 10-5A and 5-3 overall. Plano faces Plano West next before the regular season finale against Allen.
Plano East lost its third consecutive game after a 4-0 start to drop to 0-3 in 10-5A with two games remaining.
Plano’s win also deadlocks the Plano-Plano East series with each team winning 15 times with one tie.
The game was delayed about 30 minutes in the fourth quarter because of an injury to Plano East tight end Cody Verhulst. Coach Johnny Ringo said Verhulst had feeling in his extremities.
"He will be fine," Ringo said later Friday night after the game. "They will release him in a few hours."
Plano took control early with a nine-play scoring drive to open the game. Quarterback Richard Lagow scored on a 1-yard sneak on fourth-and-goal.
Plano East then drove to the Plano 28, but an interception by Brian Hanks ended the threat.
Plano converted the turnover into a 14-0 lead when Lagow found Corey Robertson for an 11-yard touchdown pass.
Two possessions later, Plano scored on just two plays — the second one a 50-yard breakaway by Campbell.
The touchdown gave Plano a 21-0 lead with 3:04 left in the first half. An interception by Steven Cypert set up another Lagow sneak for a touchdown and a 28-0 Plano lead with 9:58 left in the third quarter.
Lionel Wills, who rushed for 163 yards, put Plano East on the board with a 1-yard touchdown run with 6:58 left in the third quarter. But Plano put the game away with two more scores.
