New Allen QB Kyler Murray tosses 3 TD passes, carries Allen past Plano West, 47-25

ALLEN — If Plano West had any chance of pulling off an upset Friday night it was with senior quarterback Travis Korry under center.

But Korry exited with an injury after the first play in the second half, and Allen cruised to a 47-25 victory at Eagle Stadium.

Allen sophomore quarterback Kyler Murray struggled with his accuracy during his first two series but quickly settled down, throwing for 247 yards and three touchdowns passes. Murray, who was splitting time at the position through the first five games, took every snap under center during the first three quarters as Allen (6-1, 2-0 District 10-5A) built a 41-17 lead. Senior Connor Greenberg lined up at quarterback for the final quarter.

“He threw the ball a little bit high early in the game, but once he settled down I thought he played real well,” Allen coach Tom Westerberg said of Murray.

The 5-10, 160-pounder had been rotating with senior Oliver Pierce, but Westerberg said Murray is the Eagles’ full-time starting quarterback going forward.

Pierce has been starting at wide receiver, a position he played last season. On Friday, Pierce caught four passes for 66 yards.

Even when Murray, who had thrown only three touchdowns before Friday, was not accurate through the air, he avoided pressure with his feet, frequently extending plays.

Korry, who stood with his helmet in his left hand for the majority of the second half, completed 13-of-20 passes for 185 yards and rushed for 112 yards and two touchdowns for Plano West (3-4, 0-2).
