TD with 8 seconds left gives Garland 23-21 win over Sachse

Back takes direct snaps on final drive after quarterback injured

GARLAND — A 27-yard touchdown pass with only 1:54 left gave Sachse its first lead since early in the second quarter, but the Mustangs left about 10 seconds too much for Garland to respond. Almost entirely thanks to the legs of Ja’Taveon Green, Garland scored with only eight seconds left to prevail 23-21 Friday night at Williams Stadium.

On the third play of the game-winning drive, Owls quarterback Carvontez Gates sprained his ankle after rushing for eight yards. Green stood behind center the rest of the drive, receiving shotgun snap after shotgun snap, and running around right end four times in a row and gaining 47 yards.

“We were getting the football in the hands of our best football player, and that guy is a fighting son of a gun,” Garland coach Jeff Jordan said. “When we’ve got the ball in [Green’s] hands, he’s got a chance. He’s pretty special.”

Once inside the 10-yard line, Green tried a toss into the end zone. While incomplete, it served its purpose, as a defensive pass interference call put the ball at the three-yard line. Green dove through the line, and Garland had pulled off the unlikely.

“We told them all week it was going to be a battle through the fourth quarter,” Jordan said. “We were going to win it in the fourth quarter, and our kids believed.”

Garland (3-4, 3-0 District 11-5A) did not attempt a point after, therefore avoiding any potential of a block returned for two points by Sachse (6-2, 2-2).

Garland’s first two touchdowns came on Gates runs up the middle, as he finished with 121 rushing yards on 21 carries.

Sachse’s brief thoughts of victory came thanks to two long touchdown passes from Kent Myers, a 48-yarder to Tyrique Edwards in the first quarter and the 27-yard lead-grabber to Austin Williams.
