Mesquite wakes up in second half, scores 4 TDs in 4 possessions to outrun Rockwall-Heath, 35-14

It took a week of practice and the first half of Mesquite’s game against Rockwall-Heath for the thrill of last week’s win against Longview to clear out of the Skeeters’ system.

Once it was out, Mesquite showed exactly why it’s now the prohibitive favorites in District 12-5A after beating Heath, 35-14.

Mesquite clinched to a 7-0 lead at halftime but came out of the break scoring four touchdowns on its first four drives.

“We got the win over Longview and we came out like we were unbeatable,” Mesquite quarterback Alex Cooper said. “We got to know where we came from. We came [from] 1-9 two seasons [ago].”

Jordan Bracy took the opening kickoff of the second half back 92 yards for a TD.

Heath had a chance to pull within seven in the third, going for it on 4th-and-20 from the Mesquite 29-yard-line, but dropped a ball in the end zone.

“That was huge, no doubt,” Mesquite coach Robbie Robinson said. “It gave us a bit of cushion there and all. … I never felt comfortable until it was over. You needed every point that you could get.”

Cooper iced the game by breaking loose for a 70-yard run in the fourth quarter.

“The defensive ends just widened out the whole time; [I] saw that hole, I just took it,” Cooper said. “That was the longest I’ve ever run.”
