THE COLONY — Two botched handoffs, two subsequent fumbles and far too much momentum handed to Frisco left The Colony gasping for yards Friday night.
The first of those two fumbles gave Frisco (3-2, 2-0 District 9-4A) a short field and soon the deciding touchdown in a 28-7 district victory at Tommy Briggs Cougar Stadium.
“We thought the game was going to be really short because of the style of offense that both teams play. They burn the clock,” Frisco coach Vance Gibson said. “You knew there weren’t going to be a lot of snaps.”
Frisco stymied The Colony’s offense throughout the ground-based duel, limiting The Colony (3-2, 1-1) to 97 total yards. The Colony’s only score came after a soaring Frisco punt rolled only to Frisco’s 20-yard line.
“We’re pretty strong up front,” Gibson said. “They are a power running football team, and we’re pretty good at stopping the run.”
Frisco quarterback Jake Battaglia notched two touchdown runs of one and two yards, and completed six of seven passes for 84 yards as Frisco racked up 225 yards, a high-octane offense when compared to The Colony’s.
The Colony sealed its fate attempting a screen pass mid-way through the fourth quarter. Quarterback Troy Chandler tried to throw the ball over the charging defensive line, but Frisco defensive end Deon Kingston snagged the ball and charged into the end zone from 10 yards out.
“It was still a game until that time,” Gibson said. “That was a great athletic play.”
