After losing opening set, Plano volleyball rallies to defeat Plano West in pivotal district clash

PLANO — After three closes sets, 23-25, 27-25, 25-21, Plano eliminated the drama in the fourth set, 25-10, to beat Plano West on Tuesday.

Plano (24-9, 3-1 District 10-5A) is ranked 13th in the state in Class 5A by the Texas Girls Coaches Association. Plano West is 20-15, 3-1.

“We didn’t make any adjustments. We just settled down and had to cut back on our unforced errors,” Plano coach Terri Minnis said. “We wanted to send a message, and I think the kids did.”

Without junior Kiley Long’s 18 kills and 14 digs, that message may have been returned to sender. The six-foot strongside hitter repeatedly sent spikes past Wolves’ blockers.

“She has done a great job transitioning to the left side this year,” Minnis said. “She’s finally starting to get it.”

Long’s play was complemented by seniors Samantha Seal’s 18 kills and Audrey Landry’s 15 digs. Plano West senior Brooke Coleman had 12 kills, 12 digs and 16 assists.

“[Plano] stepped up their game and started running a little bit faster offense,” Plano West coach Brittany Bridge said. “That made our blocks struggle a little bit more, and then in game four we fell apart.”
