Hebron survives Plano rally, injury scare to top running back in 24-21 win

By Bill Nichols, staff writer

PLANO — Hebron survived two scares against Plano on Friday night at Clark Stadium.

The Hawks withstood a strong comeback, winning 24-21 when Plano’s final pass barely missed in the end zone. And it appears that an injury to running back Dezmond Wortham is not serious.

Wortham hurt his right ankle on the first drive of the third quarter. He had 163 yards and two touchdowns when he limped off.

“My trainers said they think he’s going to be OK,” Hebron coach Brian Brazil said. “If we had absolutely needed him to play I think he could have gone back in, but there was no reason to risk it.”

Trailing 24-7, the Wildcats scored 14 points late in the third quarter but could not complete the rally. On their final play, quarterback Richard Lagow heaved the ball from the 40-yard line and Mitchell Hansen stretched out to make the grab in the end zone. But Hansen, with cornerback Braelen Evans on him, couldn’t come down with the ball.

Hebron improved to 3-2; Plano dropped to 3-1.

“It was tense,” Brazil said. “They made some big plays.”

After Wortham limped off, the Hawks completed the drive with Evans’ 9-yard touchdown run. The Hawks seemed in control leading 24-7 with 6:29 remaining in the third quarter.

Plano fought back. The Wildcats scored on Andre Morman’s 21-yard run, and though they missed the PAT, they made the two-point conversion after Lagow hit Hanson for a 62-yard touchdown.

The Wildcats finished with 414 yards to Hebron’s 371. Lagow threw for 206 yards, completing four passes of 40-plus yards. Braylan Campbell rushed for 100 yards.

The teams had almost identical statistics in the first half, but the difference was on the scoreboard: Hebron 17, Plano 7.

Mistakes put the Wildcats in a hole early. They took their opening drive 78 yards, but went backward after reaching Hebron’s 2. They lost 20 yards on two penalties, then Richard Lagow’s pass to Anthony Antwine was intercepted by Braelen Evans at the 6.
