Mesquite's Junior Session busts 61-yard TD run in final minutes to stiff arm Plano West' comeback attempt

PLANO — Mesquite’s Junior Session broke a 61-yard touchdown run with 1:36 left to finish off a 49-35 win over Plano West at John Clark Stadium.

Plano West (2-2) pulled within a touchdown, 42-35, with 3:25 left when Travis Korry tossed a 33-yard touchdown pass to Zac Gideo on fourth-and-10.

Mesquite, ranked No. 6 in the area 5A poll, scored in five plays to reclaim a two-touchdown lead on Session’s touchdown run.

Mesquite (4-0) saw a 10-point halftime lead turn into a one-point deficit with three minutes left in the third quarter. Session, who rushed for 141 yards on 16 carries, scored his first touchdown and the two-point conversion to give Mesquite a 35-28 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

A 93-yard drive, capped by backup quarterback Trey Leblanc’s eight-yard scoring run, gave Mesquite a 42-28 lead with 5:52 to play.

Starting quarterback Alex Cooper passed for 314 yards and three touchdowns and ran for another 74 yards to lead Mesquite. Plano West’s Korry passed for 261 yards and rushed for 110.

Mesquite scored twice in the last four minutes of the first half to pull ahead, 24-14, at the break.

After a drive stalled at the Plano West 10, Marco Rodriguez booted a 27-yard field goal to give Mesquite a 17-14 lead with 3:16 left in the half.

Mesquite got the ball back at its 40 with 2:26 to play and marched to the Plano West 15. On second down, Cooper fired over the middle to Dameon Gamblin who reached across the goal line for a 10-point lead with 47 seconds left before intermission.

Cooper was 17 of 22 passing in the first half for 247 yards and three touchdowns.

Plano West opened the scoring when quarterback Korry kept on the option and sprinted 59 yards for a touchdown.

Mesquite responded with Cooper tossing a 28-yard touchdown pass to Dezmon Jackson for a 7-7 first quarter score.

On the first play of the second quarter, Cooper connected with Rashard Higgins for a 70-yard touchdown and a 14-7 Mesquite lead.

Plano West tied the score again with a touchdown set up by a 40-yard completion from Korry to Connor Doyle. Sotonya Jamabo scored from a yard out with 6:10 to go in the half.
