Saturday Week 2 HS football roundup: Somber Creekview holds on for win; Seguin wins a wild one

Starting LB who died Friday is remembered

CARROLLTON — Carrollton Creekview, with somber tributes before and after the game to a teammate who died this week, had a balanced performance to defeat Keller Timber Creek, 24-21, on Saturday at Standridge Stadium.

Junior quarterback David Blough passed for 227 yards, including a 64-yard scoring pass to senior Dylan Kittrell that gave Creekview (2-1) a 24-7 lead early in the third quarter.

Creekview senior Johnny Jones rushed for 97 yards and a touchdown, and he also played linebacker to help hold off a Timber Creek rally. Jones, who hadn’t practiced on defense this season, batted down a fourth-down pass on the Creekview 20-yard line late in the fourth quarter to preserve a three-point lead.

Creekview starting senior linebacker Kiet Nguyen died suddenly Friday. Officials have not released any details, and services are pending. Creekview players had red towels bearing Nguyen’s No. 9.

“We did some things together as a team Friday night to try and help each other,” Creekview coach Jay Cline said. “Kiet was a great kid. He moved from safety to linebacker to help the team. He was a leader for us. It’s been a shock.”

Timber Creek took a 7-0 lead on its first play from scrimmage as speedy junior running back Cedric Dale reversed field for a 43-yard touchdown. Creekview took a 10-7 lead after scoring on its first two possessions. Creekview led, 17-7, after a 20-yard touchdown run by Jones in the second quarter.

Timber Creek’s Dale added second-half touchdown runs of 19 and 2 yards and finished with 147 yards on 18 carries.

ARLINGTON – Arlington Seguin and Arlington Sam Houston racked up over 800 total yards, and Seguin prevailed in the offensive shootout at Wilemon Field.

Four Seguin players combined for 374 rushing yards, led by quarterback Ashon Mayze, who rushed for three scores and 240 of those yards. Jordan Hicks added two touchdowns.

Arlington Sam Houston (1-2) took the early lead as quarterback Ervin Hill, who scored twice and rushed for 66 yards, scored on a 1-yard run.

Arlington Sam Houston pulled within 21-13 on a 60-yard run by Darrion Flowers.

Sam Houston made it 21-19 after receiver JaRickey Brown recovered a fumbled interception in the end zone. The would-be tying pass on the two-points conversion try failed and Seguin had new momentum.

Seguin increased the lead quickly and for good, as Mayze ran 82 yards, giving Seguin a 28-19 lead.

KELLER -- Jimmari Morris scored on a 50-yard run with 2:30 left to lift Keller Central to the victory at Keller ISD Stadium.

Morris rushed for 136 yards on 22 carries. He scored twice. The game-winning score was set up after Lamar turned the ball over for the third time. The three turnovers led to 10 Central points.

Central (2-1) quarterback Jake McClurg completed five of 11 passes for 106 yards and a score, 72 of those came on one play to Cody Burd to bring his team within 13-10 at the half.

Aeron Daniels led Lamar (1-2) with 142 yards on 23 carries and a 1-yard scoring run. Lamar’s other touchdown came on a 14-yard pass from Gene Visor to Kavonta Mayweather.

Cole Hadley connected on field goals of 46 and 22 yards for Lamar.
