Mesquite Poteet starts strong, hangs on for 21-14 win over Wylie

WYLIE — Mesquite Poteet almost doubled Wylie’s yardage, allowed only 1.2 yards per carry and produced two interceptions.

But with time running down in the fourth quarter at Wylie Stadium, Poteet still faced a critical fourth-and-1 at Wylie’s 29. Quarterback Tanner Ramsey secured the first down and a 21-14 victory with his 5-yard run.

After Ramsey followed his line’s surge and powered up the middle, Poteet ran out the clock. Poteet improved to 3-0, dropping a scrappy Wylie team to 0-3.

Poteet could have avoided the tense conclusion. The Pirates finished with 371 yards to Wylie’s 232. But they had two touchdowns, including a 73-yard blocked field goal, nullified by penalties.

In the fourth quarter, Poteet was in control and driving with a 21-7 lead. But for some reason the Pirates decided to throw the ball. The interception set up Cook’s 19-yard touchdown pass to Alex Pina-Rhoden with 4:35 left.

Poteet came up with two big plays to secure the win. Buck Rodges caught Ramsey’s low pass for a 17-yard gain on third-and-15. That kept alive the drive that ended after Ramsey bulled through on fourth-and-1 with 1:10 left.

A running game would have helped Cook. But Wylie managed only 33 yards on 28 carries.
