Defensive player of the week (9/10): DeSoto’s Nick Orr
What he did: He ensured DeSoto would have the lead going into the half in its 46-27 win over Jenks (Okla.), blocking a punt late in the second quarter, recovering, scoring and then making an interception on Jenks’ next drive, leading to another DeSoto touchdown.
Who he is: A 5-10, 167 pound, junior safety.
The stats: Two blocked punts, one touchdown, one interception, one forced fumble, seven tackles.
He said it: “Running that touchdown, I wasn’t expecting that. … I’m thinking that. I’ll be hoping for that. I’m just glad it happened today.”
Coach said it: “He’s our Ed Reed of the secondary. He’s our Ronnie Lott of the secondary. Those guys run the secondary. They know what’s going in the secondary. They’re the vocal leaders in the secondary. He makes all the checks, all the calls in the secondary.” — Claude Mathis
Did you know?: The last time Orr scored a touchdown was in the eighth grade, on offense. … He said he has received a scholarship offer from North Texas and Texas Tech has been in contact. He said he doesn’t want to go far away from home.
